Freelancer Writing Not as Good as I need
|
I hired a freelancer who had five-star reviews, but his work has not been up to par. I heavily edited a page and find the 7 or so other pages he has done needing more editing. It has been over two weeks, the time period we specified to complete a 70-page project and he has done less than 13 pages. I did say he could have more time to produce a high-quality product, but I don't think he has the skills. I released to him half the amount up front, and now would like some of that back and have him stop the project here--just give him a lesser amount for the pages he has done. I need your advice. This is the first time I have hired anyone to write for me, my first time with http://Guru.com. Thank you. Palma Lee Stephens

Hello, Palma Lee. I'm sorry to hear of the problem you've encountered. If things aren't working out and you've been up-front with the Freelancer regarding your dissatisfaction, it should be no surprise to him/her that you want to end the agreement. You can contact the Freelancer directly to discuss the details of ending the contract. Let him/her know how much you thin is fair for the work completed to date and request a refund of any overpayment. The Freelancer may agree and the two of you can amicably end your arrangement. You'll only want to get http://Guru.com involved if you're unable to resolve it with the Freelancer. If your first move is to get http://Guru.com involved, the Freelancer may get defensive and not be as open to resolution. If you unsuccessful in your attempt to resolve the dispute with the Freelancer and there are funds in SafePay, please do contact us. We can get the dispute resolution ball rolling for you with our Mediation services. Thanks, Stacy.

Hi Palma, I am a newbie here but not to writing or editing. It seems to me you are being very generous to the writer in question. If they have only completed 13 pages in two weeks, your project is probably not their first priority and they may be glad to drop it. Contact the freelancer and say you are unhappy with the quality of their work. Ask them if they will refund some money to you in exchange for not leaving a negative review. Propose to let them keep half what you have paid them as recompense for ending the project early. That seems fair to me. Thank you, Danny. All the answers I have received have been very useful.

HI Palma, I'm sorry that you're having problems with your freelancer. It's unfortunate but things do sometimes go wrong. You do have options however, and the Guru help desk is the place to start. They can give you information about a refund of monies paid (if this is possible), how to file a dispute if necessary, etc. You can read a bit more about these things or initiate contact with help desk here. There could be slight delay due to the weekend/holiday but they will be in touch. I've found them to be fairly quick when I've had questions. HTH :)
