Do clients contact gurus directly?

Hello, I signed up with guru about three years ago and actually did not know I was still active. I just received an email from someone about a project, but no record of this is showing up on my account. Could it be a scam, or is it normal procedure for clients to contact me directly with no record of that in my account? Thanks. Katie

I get this a lot- politely ask them to post a project, and invite you to bid. Some people try to contact Freelancers by 'quick message' to get them to start up a conversation and work outside of Guru, which is not allowed or advisable- use caution and if they are sincere, will comply with the project invitation. Obviously if you haven't bid on a project of theirs, something is not quite right.

Yeah, I have not bid on his project...he emailed out of nowhere and just sent a second email asking me to go to write a sample product testimonial for him. So obviously this is not legit. He'll probably ask for my bank account info next and tell me he'll wire me payment!

Hello, Katherine.

To clarify, we provide Employers with an option to ask Freelancers questions. This option is available in the search and the Employer is not required to first post a project. We encourage Freelancers and Employers to make connections by any means that can. Many Employers use this feature and we see a lot of work completed via this channel. Some Freelancers do not use or trust this channel. For others it works out quite well.

Regardless of how an Employer contacts you, protect yourself. You can discuss project details using any communication channel you'd like. When you're ready to begin work, have the Employer post a project and use SafePay.
