What is "trade pricing"?

Exactly what the question says...Someone sent me an email asking me how much I charge for a specific project, then he asked me if I would be interested in "trade pricing" for him. I don't know what this is and neither does several friends who are Freelancers. Have any of you heard of this before? Thank you in advance.

Hello All -

In this case, you'd probably be ok to ask the Employer point blank what he or she means by 'trade pricing'. If the Employer is referring to trade pricing in line with Robin's definition, looking for a discounted or 'wholesale' price, then this would be acceptable on our site (assuming of course that you are willing to sell your services at this rate).

If the Employer is referring to a barter transaction, then yes this would be against the Terms of Services of http://Guru.com as we will not post projects that seek to trade or barter services. If this is indeed the case, you can take further steps to report this project to us by clicking the 'red flag' report project icon located near the project's description.

In any event as a general rule of thumb, it is always wise to trust your instincts and listen to your internal voices. If an Employer's request seems unusual or otherwise causes suspicion it's probably a good idea to end the conversation and move on to other opportunities.

Thanks!

He sent it in an email through here, not a listed project. How do I flag the email? I told him that it would depend on what he meant for me to consider it and haven't heard anything since. It strikes me as suspicious. I looked on the messages page for how to report it, but can't find the flag. Thanks

Ah, ok. Sorry Diana, I misunderstood. There's currently no way to report an email message; you'd simply need to contact us to report the message in question. That being said, we do have access to the communications that are sent to you through the system. I'll review your account for the message in question and review the account of the Employer to see if there is any further cause for concern or action. Thanks again!

Hi Diana,

I could be way off on this, but isn't "trade pricing" related to bartering? If you type 25 pages of something they will provide you with restaurant coupons for the assessed value of that work. That kind of thing.

If anyone else knows, more specifically, what this is, please chime in. I'm kind of curious now about this!

On a personal note, be careful of this one Diana. Anyone that approaches via email, tends to set off my "scammer" alarm.

:)

He sent this through Guru messaging system, but my gut is telling me something is up with it and to not do it. I'm going to follow my gut, but I still would like to know what trade pricing is. I responded and told him it "depended on what he meant by trade pricing" and haven't heard anything since. Thank you for responding. :)

Hey Diana,

If you do hear back about this, can you maybe post that info here? You never know - he may approach others with this, so having it mentioned here could help someone avoid a potentially costly situation.

:)

I also don't know but I'm guessing they want you to do the work for free and then compensate you when they make money from whatever it is they except you to do. Basically they want you to invest your time and experience in return for no guarantee of making any money from it.

Sounds.... scammy.
