**Update 11/19/13: Freelancers, your new Guru profiles will be available this Saturday, Nov. 23. To make this transition, the site will go down at 7 am ET and should be back up by 12 pm ET. Thanks for hanging in there with us!**

This is an exciting time here at Guru as we gear up for the release of new Freelancer profiles! We will be introducing new membership plans to accompany the new profiles. These plans will be put in place in January along with the release of new profiles to Employers.

Overview of the New Membership Plans:

You will have the option to pay your membership either on a monthly or an annual basis:

What Will Happen To My Current Membership?

We will convert your existing membership over with as little hassle as possible. In most cases, you will actually be getting more value, for less! If you renew over the next four weeks, your unused membership will be converted to the new plan that is closest in terms of cost. If you don’t want to have us convert your current plan, wait to renew until the new membership plans are put in place. Learn more: How was my membership converted?.

If you have any questions about these membership plan changes, please leave them in the comments below.

I’m excited about all the changes as I think they are definitely going to improve our Guru experience. However, I’m concerned about the price increase. I’m currently a Guru Vendor member paying $176.04 annually. After reading the help center information you link to above, I see that in order to continue linking my profile to my professional website, I’ll need to buy the business membership. That will cost $299.40 a year, which is a significant increase in annual fee even though I’ll receive fewer bids each month than I am now. What was the reasoning behind limiting a professional website link to business and executive payers only?

      Hi Angela,

Yes, there are fewer bids per month, but you now get them all at once (600)! Looking at your bidding history, that looks like it will be more than enough, so you’re actually gaining here. Also, you will be able to display your website through the expiration date of your existing membership (4/1/2014). If you choose the Professional or Basic+ membership plan after that, you can always put your website in the About section. The new profile is extremely flexible and allows you to add a lot of unique content. Not to mention, you will have access to all projects in all categories and you get a lower project fee. Have you seen the full chart of the membership benefits? http://wp.guru.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/memberTable.jpg

I hope this helps lessen your concerns!

600 bids per year are very less.

Before guru updated everything I used to get 100 bids/ month which means 1200 bids a year.

I don’t why guru did such silly updates.

It will definitely effect there reputation as compared to other crowdsourcing websites.

I have to agree with Angela Rose. As a Guru Vendor the price nearly doubles per year and the bid allotments are nearly half. We’re not really saving all that much on the lower fee structure either as looking I see we average about 7.5%. That’s quite the drastic hike in fees to be honest it makes me think twice about signing up for a year again.

      Hi Kerstin,

There are fewer bids per month, but you now get them all at once (600)! The new profile is nothing like what we offer now and provides a lot of added benefits, including a flexible design that lets you add any content you want. Not to mention, you will have access to all projects in all categories and you get a lower project fee. No more need for multiple profiles – create an unlimited amount of services, Work Collections, apply to any job…there are so many benefits that I hope you will see with the reveal of the new profiles this Saturday. I promise you are gaining, not losing here! :)

I hope this helps lessen your concerns!

Yeah, it’ll definitely be interesting to see the reactions to this. Looks like I’ll be paying double to have a profile that links to my website, and I’ll have half the bids.

    Questions:

In the table http://wp.guru.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/memberTable.jpg, what does “Earnings Boost Per Search Ranking” mean?

If a freelancer opts to renew his/her profile on a monthly basis, will the user have 50 bids (not the 600 bids that you reference, Anna, in some of your responses to questions in this blog)? Can the freelancer buy additional bids under this option?

      Hi Heidi,
We’re still finalizing the details of the changes to purchasing bids. One thing we’ve already finalized is that all members will be able to buy them. We’re lifting the restrictions on the Basic membership. You will have a definitive answer after profiles go live on Saturday.

Will each project still cost 1 bid or would the number of bids you have to use per project depend on the project’s budget?

    Reply
    • Anna

      Hi Jehanne,

The cost to bid will not depend on the project budget. Standard proposals = 1 bid. Premium proposals will be available only to Professional, Business and Executive members and will cost 5, 4 or 3 bids depending on the membership level.

    Anna,

Can you explain what the “Project messages” section means? Looking at the chart, I’m lead to believe that if those at the professional, business, or executive levels, will have to PAY 5, 4, or 3 bids per message in order to communicate with employers? If this is the case, how does this serve to build business relationships?

Freelancers are already on the paying end of all transactions, and with the increase in costs, percentages, and extra charges for communicating with an employer during a project, I can see a day when working through Guru may not be a viable option for many of us.

      Christine,

The cost for Project Messages is only if the Employer is not participating in the conversation. Basically if you use a Project Message as a way to follow up with an Employer, there will be a cost. Once a discussion is underway however, there is no cost. If the Employer initiates the conversation, there is no cost.

I hope this clears things up! :)

      Hi Anna,

I appreciate the clarification, but I find it completely ridiculous that a freelancer would use bids in order to initiate a conversation with an employer, if the employer has not done so.

    Hi! Anna

I have few queries apart from the bids which are allotted to us on monthly basis depending upon the plan we purchase can we also purchase additional bids?

Secondly it is mentioned that the skill test will also be paid after the latest version of Guru channel is officially launched is it correct? Because I really feel that skill test should be free.

Thirdly please elaborate on “Earnings Boost for search rankings” and “Bid Rollover”.

      Hi Richard,

      To answer your questions:

      1. Yes, all members will be able to purchase additional bids.
      2. Skill tests will remain free for the foreseeable future (until they run out). Please see our previous blog post that talks about this promotion here.
      3. Earnings boosts don’t affect your true earnings, but help you rank higher in search results. The higher your membership level, the more of a boost you get. Bid Rollover means that, if you don’t use all of your bids in a given month (you’re given 50 each month), they will now roll over so you can continue using them in addition to the new bids you get.

I hope these answers help clarify things for you!

It would be great to be able to upload specific samples aimed at a client’s specific requirements. Will that be available with a free membership?

    • Anna

Yes! In the future, you’ll be able to attach Work Collections of your choice to your proposals. This feature will be available to users of all memberships.

It took me a long time to get connected to a team and find regular work through GURU. I put in bids all the time, but never hear back from anyone. I can’t afford a monthly fee because I’m not getting any work through GURU. So according to the chart, with a FREE membership, I only get to bid 10 times a month?

    Reply
    • Anna

      Taduni,

You are correct that you only get 10 bids per month with the free (Basic) membership. However, you can purchase more bids if you wish once you run out. I want to point out that you may not have to use as many bids, as our system will be able to more closely match your skills and expertise to projects, so your chances of getting hired will increase.

Am I correct in understanding that by paying $1,000 to $3,000, a member can buy higehr ranking to attain visibility instead of earning it through Guru’s point system?

    Reply
    • Anna

      Hi Kay,

That is not correct. The Earnings Boost comes with paid memberships. If you’re a new Freelancer or haven’t done much business through Guru.com yet, our system will rank you as high as someone with that respective earnings amount. For example, if you have a Basic+ membership, and you have never earned money through Guru.com, you will receive an automatic boost in our search rankings the equivalent of when someone has earned $1,000 through the site. I hope this helps clarify things!

Concerning project messages. Let me understand this correctly using these scenerios.

    1. Basic membership. – I’m awarded a job. I sent a project agreement, and employer approves it. I’m waiting for the employer to send me the files I need to work with and to fund Safepay. I wait 2 – 3 days and not files. —Am I correct with the following statement? I can not message the employer stating that I’m eager to work and I’m just waiting for the files and for them to fund escrow???

    2. I’m awarded the job, everything is set, The files were included in the job’s description and the description is very simple and self explanatory. Half way through the job I come upon a problem that I need clarification or answers to. Am I correct in the following statement? — I can not message the employer because they did not message me first?

What if I run out of 600 bids. Will I have option to buy additional bids as currently using bidpax. If yes what will be the cost for that. Also what will happen to my bidpax at the transition to new profiles system on guru.

    Hi Anna,

We are currently Guru Vendor under “Website and Ecommerce” so our new profile should be under “Business” but it says “Basic”, why?

Also, I read the instructions that says the cover image we upload on ‘Portfolio’ section will always maintain an aspect ratio of 3:2 but if you could look at the new profile public link and navigate to ‘Portfolio’ section, you would see that the thumbnails are shrunk and the dimensions are 260 X 155 which doesn’t maintain the ratio 3:2.

    Could you please advise?

    Thank you.

    Hi Anna,

We found some errors while building new profile; it won’t let us finish; especially the sorting is horrible. Is there an email address we can send error details?

    Please respond.
