The Industrialized Female in W
Sharpe Sample 1.doc
Description:
Industrialization and urbanization in the Victoria Era produced crowded, noisy cities that rewrote American culture. The effects of this cultural movement on women were drastic and evident in Edith Wharton’s The House of Mirth. First, the introduction of industrialization redefined the consumer, and ultimately the female consumer. It has been noted, by Nancy Van Rosk, that feminine consumerism of the Victorian Era is actually a source of power, seeing as the women were in control of the family’s spending. However, I will argue that this consuming was to develop the female as a commodity. The other options for women in cities were to become producers (factory workers) or caretakers. I will trace these developments and options for women within the text of The House of Mirth to form the idea that industrial society created a place for women to interact with the hyper-capitalist economy in a masculine way, factory work and to a certain extent in social caretaker roles, but it challenged itself by also creating a showcase for the leisure class. And this would ultimately undermine the chance for female advancement by enticing and convincing women to remain functionless commodities.

The influence of colonization
Sharpe Sample 2.doc
Description:
In Jamaica Kincaid’s Annie John and Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, both lead characters, Annie John and Mary, are young, colonial subjects in need of gendering. In the article “Frances Hodgson Burnett: The Secret Garden” by Shirley Foster and Judy Simons, ideas of Mary’s development, including her development as a female, are discussed. Many of these points are applicable also to the development of Annie John. The act of assigning characteristics to a gender, and then training people to adhere to those qualities is fostered typically by mothers as well as in part by imperialism. Gendering can be considered a colonial-like action, and it is the product of the biological mother and the less tangible “mother land”. This influence and creation of gendered characteristics further spreads English culture, therefore aiding the cultural domination goals of colonization. The process of gender creation and assignment in Annie John and The Secret Garden is directed by colonization.

Critical Thinking
Sharpe Sample 3.doc
Description:
Students of education are well-trained in identifying the basis of "best methods" including higher order questioning, class discussion, group work and differentiated learning. These basic instructional choices are often explained to assist the development of critical thinking, an elusive, but generally understood as vital, part of education. Although definitions of critical thinking vary, this paper will refer on the synthesized definition offered by the Foundation for Critical Thinking:
Critical thinking is that mode of thinking - about any subject, content, or problem - in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully taking charge of the structures inherent in thinking and imposing intellectual standards upon them. (n.d.)
This definition is deepened with an examination of eight "elements of thought" the foundation lists as: question at issue, information, interpretation and inference, concepts, assumptions, implications and consequences, point of view and purpose. The elements of thought are what critical thinking develops. The Foundation for Critical Thinking provides detailed definitions and questions on the elements of thought which this paper will refer to in the necessary contexts.
