I have 30+ years’ experience as a typesetter . . . trained the old school way before the Macintosh. Attention to detail such as kerning, avoiding widows/orphans, word spacing (particularly in justified text), and proper hyphenation were just a few things clients demanded with every project. Although the traditional typesetter has gone the way of the dinosaur, I still finesse the text (on the Mac) and, in most cases, it doesn’t go unnoticed by my clients. My projects don't go out the door without it. I don't know any other way.
My work has ranged from business cards to complex charts and student textbooks. My software of choice is QuarkXpress but I also work with InDesign. Microsoft Word and Powerpoint are also utilized although there are some significant limitations. I have no experience with Photoshop other than being very proficient in creating clipping paths. It can be tedious work, but it's also a refreshing change from manipulating text all day.
My hourly rate is based on the number of pages I can produce in one hour. For example, if I determine I'm able to produce 10 pages/hour of a 100-page project, the price would be $300.
I also type 100+ wpm. If that's all you need, we can negotiate price.
As for creativity . . . I have none. I'm not a designer, whether it be a logo or a template for a book. Typically, a client gives me a design, specifications, artwork and text and I compose the pages.
