Highlights
|
Right out of college, I went to work in packaging electronic
circuits. I still remember that my first enclosure had 0.291 electronic
components per cubic inch of package. The “law” was circuit copper traces had
to be 0.2 inch wide and 0.1 inches apart. Have you seen the inside of your
computer lately? If I had been able to design today’s computer, just the 5,000
transistors only in a small CPU processor would have to be a box 25 X 25 X 25
inch and cooling would be impossible.
Packaging of a High Frequency radio Transceiver located in
the explosion bay of Apollo 13. No, it was not my equipment that caused the
explosion.
While breaking into Petrochemical, my assignment company was
dredging the Houston ship channel. I was asked to make a drawing of the water
depth to show where to dredge. I was frowned upon for using “Simpson’s rule” to
tell them the volume of bottom muck needing dredging. Go figure. Aerospace is
hard to get over.
Before widespread computers, I proved that a round threaded
nut, on a linear threaded rod positioned in the plane of a cone axis and
parallel to the surface, driven by rolling on the surface of the rotating cone
will trace a log-spiral on the surface of the cone. (The “poor-boy” way of
defining a conical log-spiral antenna.)
