Description:
As California officials prepared to execute Crips founder Tookie
Williams, I managed to find the widow of his first victim. The story is
a narrative account of how the shotgun murder of Albert Owens in 1979
continued to haunt his ex-wife, Linda, and further estrange her
relationship with her daughters. After more than a generation, there was still no peace in the Owen's family home.
At the time I wrote the story for The Sacramento Bee, the execution of
Tookie Williams had become a national news sensation. Celebrities,
such as Jamie Foxx and other Hollywood supporters, campaigned to spare that the condemned man's life.
Williams, while in prison, had emerged as an
anti-violence crusader, spreading his new gospel in a series of
children's books.
But for Linda Owens and her family, they had long suffered and grieved
in the shadows.
I was the only reporter in the country to find them,
and write their story.
