Chris Dickon's career-long focus as a writer and media producer has focused on the human infrastructure issues that most often form the work of nonprofit organizations.
His grant writing and research is informed by a reporter's understanding of problems and solutions, and a writer's ability to tell stories within letter of inquiry and application formats in compelling ways that can lead to actions taken.
Chris is a former nonprofit board chairman, and brings more than 25 years of writing, interviewing, producing and grant writing for public radio and television to the contemporary multi-media environment in which the written word is still the primary source of information. His print writing follows the disciplines of writing for broadcast: compelling, concise and on time. He was writer of an Emmy winning documentary on environmental history, and was writer / producer in 2004 of a documentary on developmental disability which won the 2004 Media Award of the American Association on Mental Retardation. Other awards have included those from Columbia University, Ohio State University, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Virginia Association of Broadcasters and a NATAS DC Emmy for public affairs programming. He brings to the task a reporter's ability to tell stories in any of a full-range of topics, and bases his knowledge in previous years of work in politics, social issues, history and human-interest material in the United States, and internationally in Asia, Europe, the Caribbean and the Middle East. Current writing on the internet can be found by Googling "connect for kids prison walls" and "connect for kids puzzle of a lifetime". Currently published or in production: photo history books on the Eastern Shore Railroad, Chesapeake Bay Steamships and the College of William and Mary for Arcadia Publishing, a book on the common US/UK history of a US Navy frigate that will be published in the US, Canada and the UK, a media project in support of therapeutic communities within a state prison system for the Virginia Department of Corrections, and educational/marketing media for national use on the topic of learning disability.

As the content of print and digital media converge in all forms of communication my thirty year background in the discipline of broadcast writing and reporting puts me in position to create quality content of all types - from pure writing for print to content development for media - in efficient ways. Years of award-winning work on radio (including NPR and the Voice of America) converted written words to visual impressions and told stories in ways that needed to be compelling and succinct. Award-winning television reporting, feature and documentary production needed to match the power of moving pictures and sound with the power of language. For all media deadlines must be met, editing must be fast and ensemble work is key. The visual aspects of broadcast media can be applied to printed book production. Grant research and grant writing has supported numerous projects. |
