CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT – A repeating function applied to a process or task to reduce the time and/or energy required to complete the process or task
PROBLEM: A major component (gearbox/indexers) in one of the ten-cup printer is failing. History: Two years prior the task removed the equipment from service for three full days (72 hours) and required three mechanics.
ACTION: Conduct a mini Kaizen event with the maintenance; outline equipment, assets and information needed. Shadow the actual event to develop accurate documents.
RESULTS: The information from the shodow analysis was further refined at the completion of the task. Time savings 36 hours – Labor savings one mechanic at 72 hours This task was completed in thirty-six hours by two mechanics. Two detailed standard operation procedures (SOP) were written with two standard work instructions outlines (SWI) written for a total of four documents.
EPILOGUE: Due to aging equipment in the department this task had to be repeated on another cup-printer six months later. This instance was completed by two mechanics in eight hours. Before starting the second instance, a ten-minute review of the stepwise SWI outline with the two mechanics was conducted.
Application of the principles of Lean and SMED yielded positive quantitative results through training, engineering and continuous improvement. Thank you for your time and consideration. Connect with me and we can discuss how these techniques can work at your company.
