Highlights
|
|
I've been developing software for nearly 30 years. Languages and technologies come and go, but the basics never change. It always comes down to choosing the best tools and methods for the task at hand and keeping it as simple as possible. Most projects fail because someone made them too complicated. Learning to use a language or a tool is easy compared to designing and implementing a simple, straightforward solution that solves the problem at hand. This is what I do.

| Software Skills: |
I have learned many languages and tools throughout my career. I started with BASIC and COBOL, moved into C and C++, then Java and C#. There were many other languages such as Lex, Yacc, HTML, XML, XSLT and all sorts of scripting languages. I have used hundreds of tools from compilers and code generators to graphics libraries and user controls. It's hard to keep up with all of the changes, but that's not the hardest part of being a developer. The most difficult and most rewardnig part of the job is translating the user's requirements into an elegant solution. |
| Additional Skills: |
I have run my own business for most of my career. I have worked in very small companies and sizable corporations in various capacities. I understand business and I know how to understand a customers problem and work out the best, simplest and most efficient way to solve it. The solution does not always involve software. Sometimes software is only part of the solution. But whatever it is, I can get to the bottom of it. |

I nearly always write code on my own equipment.
Payment terms and business arrangements differ from project to project. For a short term relationship, it is important to reduce risk for both the customer and for myself. The customer's risk is that he will not get what he wanted and waste valuable time or money in the process. My risk is mainly that I spend my valuable time and cannot be paid. With good enough communication, risk can be minimized.
Where possible, I prefer and approach whereby we produce and deliver a valuable, usable product in the shortest possible time. We can then expand on that base to accomplish the full goal of the project, building trust and confidence in the process.
