Highlights
|
|
During the last two years, I have had the pleasure of working for the BMW Car Club of America as their Database Administrator and Webmaster. In the fall of 2006, I was promoted to manager and have been training a staff including an in-house developer and several web volunteers. During my time here, I have been responsible for maintaining the LAN and all computer hardware and software (including Windows Server 2000/2003, XP, and Mac OS X in an Active Directory environment) for the club’s national headquarters. Additionally, I have spearheaded a move to a more web-oriented stance, employing the Drupal Content Management System and writing new custom software to integrate with our MS SQL back end. We are currently in the process of rolling out a new upgrade with enhanced features for all 75,000 members of the club.
At the same time, I have run the Southeastern Skies Planetarium – an inflatable traveling planetarium designed to teach students about the night sky. As owner and director of such a facility, I have been responsible for all aspects of the business, from developing an astronomy-based curriculum to maintaining projectors to managing the finances and customer service of a growing endeavor.
Between the fall of 1998 and summer of 2003, I was the Planetarium Educator/Production Specialist at the T. C. Hooper Planetarium – Sciencesphere at the Roper Mountain Science Center in Greenville, South Carolina. During that time, I served a number of roles in the largest planetarium in South Carolina. I designed and maintained the planetarium’s LAN, maintained all Science Center computers, printers, and networked devices; developed the Science Center’s entire web site; created multiple computer programs to assist with planetarium program development; and developed 2D and 3D graphics for display during programs. I managed the planetarium’s upgrade from a Digistar I computer system to a Digistar II, and trained extensively locally and at Evans & Sutherland headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah, learning how to program, maintain, and repair the system. I quickly adopted the sole task of training and managing part-time employees and volunteers, and take pride in my “hands-on” approach to maintaining a good rapport with staff and coworkers.
Prior to my time at the Roper Mountain Science Center, I was the Planetarium Educator at the Alexander Brest Planetarium at the Museum of Science and History in Jacksonville, Florida, where I also developed and programmed their first web site. In college, I served as the Student Director of the J. I. Holcomb Observatory and Planetarium. In both of these positions, I assisted with the maintenance and upkeep of planetarium equipment and computers, developed new programs, managed employees and volunteers, and presented programs of the highest quality in an attempt to educate and entertain anyone interested in learning about astronomy.
I possess a wide array of abilities that I have honed during my fifteen years as a programmer and planetarium professional. I am comfortable with all forms of technology, and am not afraid to jump in and start learning new languages, equipment, and presentation techniques. I believe in good communication with coworkers and clients, and have good presentation skills, both in writing and in person. I am also experienced with American Sign Language, facilitating my ability to communicate with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
