This is what I prefer to do, where possible and applicable:
1. Project kick-off meeting upon project award. This involves team introduction and discussing communications strategy, reporting strategy, change management strategy, getting detailed project requirements, and other issues of interest. This could be a face to face meeting or virtual meeting.
2. Getting feedback from the end users or representatives during various stages of the project. I believe no matter how good a product is, if end users do not percieve it that way, it does not count as successful one. Also, user interface, both for end users and system administrators, is my key focus. I try to make things as intuitive as possible -- in many cases they can figure it out without reading user manuals or going through rigerous traninig.
3. I prefer to have progress meetings if need be and a close out meeting at the end, to make sure all loose end are closed.
4. I do provide 30 days post-implementation maintenance and support free of cost. This includes bug fixes, user training issues, answering questions/concerns, etc.
5. Do not pay, if you don't like the work. How about that? I do not bid on a project or accept a project, if I believe I can't do a superb job. If you are not satisfied with the results, please provide feedback in progress meetings. If you are still not satisfied with the end project, cancel it without paying for work already done.
