My first job revolved around a program the owner had written that served as the phone equivalent of an Internet mailing list. You could provide a wav file, info on when to call and a list of numbers, then the program would call and retry numbers as needed to send out a message such as "Tonight's softball game is canceled." At this job I frequently used VB6 for creating utility programs that would transform arbitrary database, spreadsheet and text listings of or containing phone numbers to a usable format. After a while I wrote the (long replaced) ASP web pages allowing an outside user to upload their list and step through telling the site what it should pull out. My primary skill was speed, dealing with an endless wave of cosmetic changes.

Between jobs (lay-offs) I contracted as an ASP / SQL developer.

The second full time job as a programmer was to be an assistant for the existing Delphi programmer, performing program maintenance for his apps and a VB6 app from another division and all things web with ASP. VB6 was my main language for transforming / routing data and formatting it to be sent to mainframes. Delphi was used for a handful of tasks such as talking to scanners and sending e-mail. I'm now one member of a team using .Net (mostly C#) in gathering data (text and images), routing it as needed, presenting it to be corrected and reporting on everything. These activities deal heavily with MS SQL Server, Access and Excel while dabbling in Oracle, Twain and MQ.

If you need a quick Perl script to tie a few other programs together, that's minimal. Being tossed headfirst into quirky hardware can be a real time sink.

4. Do you have only a vague idea of what is needed, meetings of those affected should be scheduled so I can develop your specs from a consensus of those in the field who understand what the project needs to do?

Payment methods: whatever works for paying through Guru. One payment at the end is fine, but you're paying for my time and what you asked for, not what you want. I want to give you what you want and will do my best, but if 3 weeks into the Windows project your company moves to Linux, that's 3 weeks.

Communication: E-mails copied to all involved so no one can claim "I never said that!"

Ethics / guarantee: If my program is broken, it's on me to fix. I expect you to keep your data backed up. We both keep a copy of my source for verification. I'll walk through it all. My liability is limited to what I was paid and / or replacing and formatting the data for recovery. All projects are confidential to any other employers. When done, the program is yours to do as you wish with, but I retain a copy of the source for future products. I can't sell the app, but can use parts of it in other apps.
