Description:
This was my final project for the Electronics Engineering Technology program at DeVry at Fremont. It was a group project (four members) and I was in charge of the programming. The 'product' was a credit card system using Smart Cards to store finger print data. Rather than requiring a written signature, the card holder would have a finger scan taken, which would then be compared to the fingerprint data stored on the card. The project won the People's Choice award.
My task was to interface with three devices: (1) A PC 'terminal', which used Java on the PC side to handle RS-232 communication; (2) a Smart Card device using a fairly basic protocol; and (3) a fingerprint scanner which used a substantially more sophisticated protocol (it was designed to be networkable.) The unit itself was Microchip PIC-powered and used multiplexing/demultiplexing chips to interact with the external devices.
The project involved a lot of assembly. It would have driven most people insane, but I built the project using many macros, library subroutines, and other abstractions. The top-level file (unit\flow.grp) is written in a simple custom language 'compiled' by Mathematica that encapsulates assembly and makes flow control straightforward. Looking back, XSLT would have been a much better choice, but I wasn't aware of that technology at the time.
