As an OEM of yield enhancement and defect diagnostic equipment, KLAC is the market leader in this semiconductor manufacturing equipment segment holding about 41% market share. Their current product offering is targeted towards 200-300mm wafer semiconductor companies. High-end tools for leading-edge, high volume companies and foundries are generally targeted to the 300mm wafer fabrication, 90nm and lower technology node.
A recent industry analyst report suggested that KLAC is on the fringe of losing market share to its competitors – primarily Applied Materials [AMAT]. Specific concern is KLA-Tencor’s high-end, high margin reticle inspection tool.
