Generally speaking most business owners and managers have an idea of their requirements but require some "listening time", to express those needs. I feel that this time is an introductory period where we both get familiar with the needs and offerings to make the project successful.
For this reason, I always charge $0.00 for the first 90 minutes and prefer the meeting to be face to face.
Contracts are always on a basis of escrow, with the usual terms of 1/3 on award, 1/3 on completion and 1/3 on 30 days after successful deployment.
