Play-by-Post Sci-Fi roleplaying game
I am working to establish a web site for a slightly different approach to a PBP (play by post) roleplaying game. Myself and a friend had basically been running a game as a hobby (www.URLremovedbyGuru.com/reborn) for a couple of years.
I am currently considering the possibility... Show all I am working to establish a web site for a slightly different approach to a PBP (play by post) roleplaying game. Myself and a friend had basically been running a game as a hobby (www.URLremovedbyGuru.com/reborn) for a couple of years.
I am currently considering the possibility of establishing a commercial gaming site. This will enable individuals or groups to play this turn/round-based online roleplaying game. Essentially the web site is an interface for: people to join the game; to write and post their desired actions for the round; the players to access game information; and for the games master to access the posts and write what happens in the round. Rather than a MMPORPG this is basically a turn/round-based text roleplaying game. The back-end is about handling posts from players and the gm, as well as two FAQ systems. The back-end doesn't actually handle any of the game mechanics.
In practice I suspect this requires a few web-based applications / databases that have some sharing of data, and are accessible through a web interface.
I am relaxed about the timing for the build. I'd basically like this to be operational by the end of the year, but otherwise I am happy for this to take several months to pull together and for it to be fit around other work. Of course, it would be terrific if your pricing reflected this relaxed approach ;)
Below is some commentary of my thoughts and ideas. Rather than just pricing doing the work, I'd appreciate hearing your input and ideas.
*** 1.0 WEB SITE ***
The existing site (www.URLremovedbyGuru.com/reborn) design is based upon a template purchased from StockLayout. While I quite like the site, I want something which is completely fresh. I want something which looks sharp, edgy and professional. The game itself is closer to a 2004 Battlestar Galactica view of the future than a Star Trek-type of future. I think the content for the various pages should be mostly dynamic. However, given I am quite comfortable with html and css, there might be some elements of the page structure that could be most economically produced statically. I think judicious use of Flash would be good (for some eye candy). I am working with a couple of illustrators and a flash designer, so could commission them to do any elements you are unable to provide.
*** 2.0 HOSTING ***
I will need you to let me know what hosting requirements the build will need. I am also very happy to take suggestions with regards to a host (one thing I will want from a host is a good approach to automated back ups). It probably makes sense if the host is: in the same time zone as you; offers a good trade off between price, reliability, service and bandwidth; and has a good control panel for db creation and management. I will probably look to register the domain through them and was thinking of www.rebornthegame.com.
*** 3.0 FEATURES OF THE BUILD ***
Below are my ideas for the various modules for this project, with some further more detailed discussion further below.
3.1 Membership system - Online joining, subscription management, user management and tracking, list extraction and reports, and data about current games (number of players, round number).
3.1.2 Game Manager sub-system - Players start or join a game and select which character to play, addition of other players, assigning a Games Master user, management of players, and closure of games
3.2 Round Manager - Players create, edit and post their actions / requests / questions for the round. GM reads posts and posts the Round, restarting the posting process.
3.2.1 GM Manager sub-system - The administrator can create a GM user and assign them to a game. To start with the Administrator and the GM will be the same person (me). When a GM logs on they are presented with a list of the games they are running. It should show if the round has closed, if any players failed to make a post, if any players have withdrawn, and whether the round is awaiting the GM writing and submitting the next Round. There should be a link so the GM can access the Round Manager for the group / game with GM priveledges.
3.3 Character Manager - This is a system for tracking information about the characters in a game (player and gm controlled). There are elements which are visible just to the gm, to the gm and the player who is playing the character, or all the players in a game. The gm will edit and update the character sheets during the course of the game.
3.5 Encyclopedia - A web based and searchable encyclopedia. I am thinking that it might be useful to utilise the same FAQ system being utilised on www.qpsu.org.au/faq. The main difference being that entries are created by the Administrator, some items will be accessible by all players in all games but other items the gm users will need to add access priveledges for players in a game.
3.6 Game FAQ - Basically identical to the QPSU FAQ system (see above), with administrative, technical and help information available to all visitors to the site.
3.7 Site blog - A blog that will be used for web site and game news that will be displayed on the public page and the other side of the log in portal. If possible, could this blog include poll functionality?
3.8 Advertising - I want to be able to incorporate advertisements on the site... probably with a random load image+link in a side bar on the site. Perhaps include view and click through information accessible by the administrator. Any suggestions welcome. I am hoping to initially advertise the site using a link exchange with some relevant sites (eg sci-fi ezines), but also may wish to enable others to buy advertising on the site.
3.9 Extra stuff - Though this might not be part of the initial build I was thinking of the following extra stuff that might be added and should at least be anticipated by the initial coding for the modules: RSS feed of the blog; RSS feed of round status (is it open, whose posted, has the gm posted); a Vista windows sidebar application of round status and game information (and perhaps a special version for the administrator and games master(S); accessing round information and round posting via a mobile device; and some sort of Facebook interface (probably for the community of players across the entire system).
I was thinking of incorporating Google Analytics for gathering information about site traffic, access and usage. Alternate suggestions welcome.
*** 4.0 EXAMPLE SITE INTERACTION WALK THROUGH ***
4.1 A visitor goes to main public page, access some promotional material about the game and the game FAQ, and then decides to play.
4.2 They follow the link to the Join page where they create a log in account. They can decide whether they wish to use a cookie for their browser to remember their log in information. They are reminded that the first 3 rounds of the game are free. They are asked if they are over 15 and given the content warning. If they are aged <18 they are asked to consult with a parent / guardian before proceeding. They decide whether to start a new game or join an existing game.
4.2.1 If they choose to start a new group / game they are asked to name the group / game. They are then asked to select one of the 10 possible characters. They should be able to access the starting sheets of the available characters. The player can then decide whether to permit other players to join their game. It would be terrific if there was facility for them to invite other potential players. Until Round 6 the initiating player can decide use a control within the group / game area to lock the game, which will at that point prevent other players from joining the game.
4.2.2 If the new player chooses to join an existing game they are presented with a list of the current games - the title for the group was given by the first player, the login names of the existing players (and how long they have been a member of Reborn PBPRPG, which characters are taken and which are available. They should be able to access the starting sheets of the available characters.
4.3 They access the Game Area for their group. They review the Group roster, and access some of the entries from the encyclopedia and the FAQ. The player accesses the first round, reading the entry for their character and the group entry. This is Round 1 of the game.
4.4 The player uses the interface to post his instructions / requests / intended actions for Round 2. There is also an interface to post questions to the GM, and to decide whether the question and answer can be viewed by other players*. The player then decides whether to save their post for Round 2 for later editing, save and submit their post for Round 2, or cancel losing any text they have entered for the post. * If the game is open to other players
4.5 The player exits the game / group area.
*** 5.0 MORE DETAILED REFLECTIONS: MEMBERSHIP SYSTEM ***
5.1 We need a secure membership form which visitors use to join a game, This will need to include some required fields (including reconfirming the player's email address) and protection for the system against spamming. They would get a unique alias and password for that game. The system will need to save their details.
5.2 As noted in 4.2.1 the user can decide whether to start a new game or join an existing game
5.2.2 If the player chooses to start a new group / game they are asked to name the group / game. They can select one of the 10 possible characters. They should be able to access the starting sheets of the available characters. The player can then decide whether to permit other players to join.
5.2.2 If the player chooses to join an existing game they are presented with a list of the current games - the title for the group given by the first player, the login names of the existing players (and how long they have been a member of Reborn MPORG, which character are taken and which are available. They should be able to access the starting sheets of the available characters.
5.3 There will be a maximum of 5 players per game (or 1 player if the initiating player decides not to allow other players).
5.4 If a new player joins an existing game in rounds 1 -3 the players will have to choose from a predefined list of 10 possible characters (excluding those characters already taken by other players). If they join in rounds 4 - 6 they can choose from one of another group of 5 characters (not already taken by other players). Most of the attributes of the available character are unknown (but will become revealed to the player as the game progresses).
5.5 Players get the first three rounds free. After that the player will need to pay a subscription fee (see below about fees). Once their free rounds end they will not be able to post a new round or read new posts until they pay a subscription fee.
5.6 Obviously the system needs to be able to track members, offer administrator reports and enable administrator searches, as well as be able to automatically issue replacement passwords.
5.7 The administrator should be able to view and edit information.
5.8 In the event of a character dying where the player still has credits, these will remain assigned to the player and can be used by them for a new game (with the first three rounds of the new game still being free). In the new game they can once again chose whether to start a new game, or enter an existing game. They could elect either to play a different character or the same character (but any skills, equipment, etc from the previous game will not be carried forward to the new game... their character is a clean slate).
*** 6.0 MORE DETAILED REFLECTIONS: ROUND MANAGER ***
6.1. The flow of the game is broken into rounds where the each of the players in the group post their questions / requests and instructions for the round. As well as any notes for the Game Master.
6.2 When viewing a round they see what the GM has wrote for them that round, and what the GM has written for the entire group. I can give you an example of a GM post if you like. The player can also view the response to the questions the player asked with their post at the end of the previous round, and the responses to questions from other players (where they have been granted permission to view the question / answer).
6.3 The player interface for creating their post should be a basic WYSWIG editor, with some built in CSS formatting options (eg the text effects to show that the dialogue is a Telepathic communication).
6.4 As part of the round, the player will roll two 10 sided dice ten times to come up with 10 sets of numbers between 01 and 100. These rolls are used by the GM to determine how well the player does with the things they try to do that round. It would be cool if there is some kind of animation that plays for the rolls before displaying their rolled numbers. When the Games Master reads the player's post, they will see these rolls.
6.5 Only the player and the Game Master will see the player's post.
6.6 In multi-player games, the player can decide whether each of their questions (and the answers) for a round can be viewed by only themselves, individual other players in their group, or all the other players in their group.
6.7 In multi-player games, the player can decide whether their comment to the GM (and the responsre) for a round can be viewed by only themselves, individual other players in their group, or all the other players in their group.
6.8 The player(s) in a game have 30 days to make their post for the round. After the 30 days are up they are taken as not given any instructions for the round (so will have no opportunity to shape the events of that round). The system should issue an initial notice to all player via email when the round is posted and that they have 30 days in which to submit their instructions / requests / questions for the round. Players who have not submitted their round should receive reminders at 14 days, 7 days and a final 24h warning. Once the round closes the player's credits are deducted, even if they do not make a submission (because they will still get the posting for next round). The auto email should contain a link to take the player to a form where they can log into the game area and another link they can use to retire from the game (meaning that they retain any unused credits).
6.9 If a player doesn't post for 3 successive rounds their account should go inactive and they should no longer be able to access the game area. The withdrawal of players will not end the games unless all of the players withdraw. However all of the players within the game should be notified when a player withdraws. A player who is withdrawn from a games keeps any unused subscription credits. The administrator should be able to, on request, reactivate a player's access to the game.
6.10 The GM is sent an automated email when all of the players in a game have lodged their posts. There should be a link to take the gm to the initial screen listing the games they are running.
6.11 Upon accessing the Round Manager, the Game Master reviews the posting and comments from the player(s). He works on the next round for the individual players and for the whole group.
6.12 The GM also writes the responses to the questions posed by players, and should see the information of who will see the reply. The questions and responses should compile into the Encyclopedia (with the entries only being visible to the authorised players and the gm).
6.13 The GM also writes the responses to any comments from players, and should see the information of who will see the reply.
6.14 The GM interface for creating the Round should be a basic WYSWIG editor, with some built in CSS formatting options (eg the text effects for Telepathic communications). And with the ability to insert images, sounds or links to encyclopedia items.
6.15 Once the GM posts the round, the cycle restarts.
NB - It would be great to include within a posted round the key in a div that stays on the page which explains what the different pre-defined text formats mean.
*** 7.0 MORE DETAILED REFLECTIONS: CHARACTER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM ***
7.1 All of the games start with the same 11 characters (10 of which are available to the up to 5 initial players), with an additional 8 characters (5 of whom are available to players who join the game between rounds 4 - 6). The starting state of these 19 characters are the same for every game, but the characters will develop and change in different ways for the diffeent games, and some characters will die in some games.
7.2 There should be an interface for the administrator to maintain the 19 characters. Really after initial establishment, the starting state of these characters would probably mot be edited very often. But it should be possible for the administrator to add images to the gallery of available images for the different characters. Other than that the character screens will be managed by the GM and be game-specific.
7.3 The GM is the only one who can see all of the labels and fields in the character sheets. The GM is the only one with edit access. There should be tick boxes for the GM to determine whether the label or label and field is visible to the person playing the character (if there is one). And a separate tick box to detemine if the label or label and field it is visible to all players in the game. The gm can also set whether the character is active (so appears in the character roster), missing (so appears in the character roster with a 75% transparent overlay of the character sheet when viewed with a watermark Missing in Action), deceased (so appears in the character roster with a 50% transparent overlay of the character sheet when viewed with a watermark Killed in Action), or yet to join the game (which applies to the 8 characters who will join some time after Round 3 - they are not visible in the character roster).
7.4 The sheet includes an image (or images) of the character which draws from a library that is maintained by the administrator. All games should start with a default image for each of the characters. The GM can decide whether to make other images from the library visible to the player who is playing the character or to defined other characters.
7.5 The character sheet includes some demographic (eg gender, age, cultural background, world of origin) and phsical descriptors (eg height and weight)*.
7.6 There are 16 attributes (Strength, Health, Endurance, Fatigue, Agility, Coordination, Reasoning, Wisdom, Willpower, Composure, Presence, Empathy, Sanity. Karma, Psychic Quotient, and Appearance) which are rated between 01 and 200 #*~.
* There should be the option of making the real values visible to the gm only (which is the default position), the gm and the person playing the character, or all the players in the game.
# At the start of the game the player who is playing the character will know their old values (prior to being modified by the Invessi). The gm will be able to decide when to use the tag mechanism above to reveal the current real values to the player.
~ Numbers above 100 should display in a different colour (to show they are preternatural).
7.7 The attrributes can be depressed by injury, illness or fatigue (with colour changes and a modifier shown (eg -20) denoting that the attribute has been effected).
7.8 The attributes can be enhanced by technology, drugs or other factors (with colour changes and a modified (eg +20) denoting that the attribute has been effected).
7.9 There should be a key for the colour formatting.
7.10 There should be a table of skills (with an extendable number of rows) with a number rating between 01 and 150. There should be a column for Attribute Modifier. The gm should have the ability to set individually whether the skill label are visible only to the gm, the gm and the person playing the character, or all the players in the group. The gm should also be able to set whether skill rating are visible only to the gm, the gm and the person playing the character, or all the players in the group. The gm should also be able to set whether skill attribute modifiers are visible only to the gm, the gm and the person playing the character, or all the players in the group.
7.11 There should be a table of psionic abilities (with an extendable number of rows) with a number rating between 01 and 150. There should be a column for Attribute Modifier. The gm should have the ability to set individually whether the ability labels are visible only to the gm, the gm and the person playing the character, or all the players in the group. The gm should also be able to set whether ability ratings are visible only to the gm, the gm and the person playing the character, or all the players in the group. The gm should also be able to set whether ability attribute modifiers are visible only to the gm, the gm and the person playing the character, or all the players in the group.
7.12 Table (with an extendable number of rows) for recording the equipment the character is carrying and notes about the equipment. The gm should be able to set whether other players can see the individual items of equipment the charater has.
7.13 There should be a biographic field that is visible only to the gm and player.
7.14 It might be useful to have a Notes field that they can use to write themselves reminders about the character that only the person writing the notes (and the GM) can see.
7.15 There should also be a True History and Notes field that is only visible to the gm (for tracking and reminder purposes).
7.16 During the course of the game the gm will be editing the various information in the character sheet, including potentially changing the setting of who can view items.
*** 8.0 MORE DETAILED REFLECTIONS: ENCYCLOPEDIA ***
8.1 As noted previously. The game needs an encyclopedia which is very much like the FAQ produced for www.qpsu.org.au - eg with entries being credited using a WYSWIG editor, with some predefined formatting.
8.2 Items are created within categories (unlike the QPSU FAQ it would be great if encyclopedia items can be assigned to more than one category).
8.3 Like the QPSU FAQ it should be possible to use keywords to associate different entries.
8.4 Like the QPSU FAQ a person who views an item should be able to contribute to a rating of items.
8.5 Unlike the QPSU FAQ, there should be an interface that GMs should be able to use to set which players can access which items. This list of players will need to be dynamic showing players name, game and character, and will the GM to be making changes as new games start and the rounds progress.
8.6 There should be a search facility so players can perform a boolean search, as well as browse through the encyclopedia by category, alphabetically or by date added.
*** 9.0 MORE DETAILED REFLECTIONS: GAME FAQ ***
9.1 As noted previously. The game needs an open access Game FAQ which is very much like the FAQ produced for www.qpsu.org.au - eg with entries being credited using a WYSWIG editor, with some predefined formatting.
9.2 Items are created within categories (unlike the QPSU FAQ it would be great if the system's faq items can be assigned to more than one category).
9.3 Like the QPSU FAQ it should be possible to use keywords to associate different entries.
9.4 Like the QPSU FAQ a person who views an item should be able to contribute to a rating of items.
9.5 There should be a search facility so viewers can perform a boolean search, as well as browse through the faq by category.
*** 10.0 INSIDE THE GAME AREA ***
Once a player logs in there should be a page consisting of the various contents and functions created by the system s above. The developer is invited to come up with something slick, professional looking and user friendly. Some ideas are below.
10.1 In here there should be a list of the current players in their group, and email links and their character names. This should include gm controlled characters.
10.2 There should be the character roster with the ability to call up the character sheets of members of the group.
10.3 They should be able to view previous rounds (and perhaps search the rounds using Boolean search terms).
10.4 There should also be the interface to work on their post for the current round.
10.5 There should be a visual representation of which players have submitted their round, who is working on their round but not submitted, and who has not started work on their round yet.
10.6 There should be a dynamic counter for the close of the round: days:hours:minuites.
10.7 There should be a link to the encyclopedia, faq and blog. Perhaps the latest 5 and the 5 most viewed entries (perhaps also with a loading based on the rating of items) for each appear on the game screen, with a link to access the full system. Of course this would need to exclude encyclopedia items the player is not authorised to view.
10.8 Perhaps we include a bulletin board and/or chatroom within the game screen (ie just for use by the players for a particular game and the gm).
*** 11.0 Subscriptions ***
11.1 The administrator should be able to set the price for buying 1, 6 and 12 rounds.
11.2 I suspect the simplest idea would be to use PayPal for the receipt of payments, but I have no experience of receiving payments through Pay Pal. Any suggestions or ideas welcome.
11.3 The system will obviously need to keep track of whether a player is in the free period, and how many credits they have, and deduct as they post a round. It probably should be possible for the administrator to add credits to a user's account.
11.4 In practice a person could have multiple log ins and play in multiple games.
11.5 I think from a business point of view I need to allow people under 18 to join and play, but I probably need a MA type of warning about the content (because of violence, sexual references and adult themes) - so indicate that persons under 15 must not play. I think we probably also need to say that if the person is under 18 they have to talk to a parent / guardian first before paying a subscription. Once again, any ideas would be appreciated. Show less
