How SafePay Escrow works - in detail
- Award the Project to the Best Freelancer
Select the Freelancer(s) you wish to hire by clicking the "Award" button next to your chosen Freelancer's quote. This sends the Freelancer a message that asks him or her to accept or decline the project.
- The Freelancer Uploads a Project Agreement
Once the Freelancer accepts the project, ask the Freelancer to create and upload an online Project Agreement. Once the Freelancer has done so, we send you an email that asks you to approve or decline the agreement.
- The Freelancer Creates an Escrow Request
After you approve the Project Agreement, ask the Freelancer to create an Escrow Request in the amount agreed upon in your online Project Agreement.
- Deposit Funds into Escrow
Once the Freelancer creates the Escrow Request, Guru.com sends you an official Guru.com Escrow Request email. Review the Escrow Request, and pay the amount to Guru.com via Check, E-check, PayPal, Credit Card, Wire Transfer, or SafePay Account Funds. (More info)
- We Hold the Funds
Once we receive your Escrow payment, we notify the Freelancer and hold the funds in a neutral Escrow Account.
- Review the Project Work
Once the Freelancer completes the project work, review it and ensure that you are satisfied that it meets the terms of your agreement.

How to get an Escrow Account started with a Freelancer
To get an Escrow Account started, ask your Freelancer to upload an online Project Agreement and create an Escrow Request. Once the Freelancer performs these two tasks, you will receive two emails. One email will ask you to review and approve the online Project Agreement. The other email will ask you to deposit funds into the newly created Escrow Account.
If your Freelancer needs assistance, please tell them to email us at contactus@guru.com. We'll help them with the process.
If a Freelancer asks you to pay through Invoicing, but you'd rather use Escrow, please follow these steps.
- Do not pay the Invoice.
- Ask the Freelancer to delete the Invoice and create an Escrow Request instead.

Escrow has multiple deposit amount and release scheduling options
With Escrow, you have three deposit amount and release scheduling options.
- One deposit. One release. (Deposit 100% upfront. Release 100% at the end.)
For example, you agree to pay a Freelancer $1,000 (total) for a project.
- The Freelancer creates an Escrow Request for $1,000.
- You deposit $1,000 into an Escrow Account before project work begins.
- After the Freelancer completes the agreed-upon work, you sign in to your account and release the full $1,000.
- One deposit. Multiple releases. (Deposit 100% upfront. Release funds in installments.)
For example, you agree to pay a Freelancer $1,000 (total) for a project.
- The Freelancer creates an Escrow Request for $1,000.
- You deposit $1,000 into an Escrow Account before project work begins.
- After the Freelancer completes "Phase 1" of the project work, you sign in to your Guru.com Employer account and release $500.
- After the Freelancer completes "Phase 2", you release $250.
- And, after the Freelancer completes "Phase 3" (or the final phase), you release the final $250.
- Multiple deposits. Multiple releases.
For example, you agree to pay a Freelancer $1,000 (total) for a project in two segments of $500.
- The Freelancer creates an Escrow Request for $500.
- You deposit $500 into an Escrow Account before project work begins.
- After the Freelancer completes "Phase 1" of the project work, you sign in to your account and release $500.
- The Freelancer creates another Escrow Request for $500.
- You deposit the final $500 into an Escrow Account.
- After the Freelancer completes "Phase 2" (or the final phase), you release the final $500.

To add funds to an Escrow Account, the Freelancer you hired must first generate an Escrow Request. You will receive an official Guru.com Escrow Request email when the Freelancer creates a new Escrow Request.

Confirming that funds were added to an Escrow Account
To confirm that funds were added to an Escrow Account:
- Sign in to your Employer account.
- On the My Admin page, click the "Manage Escrows" link.
- Locate the Escrow Account you wish to check, and look for the status designation.
- Escrow Accounts with added funds are marked, "Funds Deposited."

Releasing funds from an Escrow Account
By releasing your Escrowed funds, you signal that you are satisfied with the project deliverables and authorize us to submit payment to the Freelancer.
Please note: Escrow has multiple release scheduling options.
To release Escrowed funds:
- Sign in to your Employer account.
- On the My Admin page, click the "Manage Escrows" link.
- Locate the Escrow Account from which you wish to release funds.
- Click the "Enter Release Amt" button under the Action column.
- Follow the instructions on the next page.

Reviewing existing Escrow Accounts
To view existing Escrow Accounts and the fund release History associated with each account:
- Sign in to your Employer account.
- On the My Admin page, click the "Manage Escrows" link.
- Locate the Escrow Account(s) you wish to view.
- The "Escrow Status" column shows the amount of "Funds Deposited" and "Funds Released to Pro" for each Escrow Account.
- Click the "View" button to view the original Escrow request submitted.
- Click the "Enter Release Amt" or "Release History" button to review your fund release History.

Deleting an Escrow Account
You can only delete Escrow Accounts when all funds have been released. To delete an Escrow Account:
- Sign in to your Employer account.
- On the My Admin page, click the "Manage Escrows" link.
- Locate the Escrow Account you wish to delete.
- Click the "Request Delete" button under the Action column.

Receiving a refund of Escrowed funds
If you and a Freelancer agree that you are entitled to a full or partial refund of Escrowed funds, ask the Freelancer to issue a refund by following the steps listed here.
If the Freelancer does not agree to the refund, please email us to report a potential dispute.

Finding your SafePay Billing Code
The SafePay Billing Code is a unique number assigned to each Employer who registers with Guru.com. When you release your SafePay Billing Code to a Freelancer, the Freelancer can create an Escrow Request for you. Awarding a project to a Freelancer automatically releases your SafePay Billing Code.
You can locate your SafePay Billing Code in two places:

- We Send the Funds to the Freelancer
Once we receive your payment, we immediately send the funds to the Freelancer after deducting any applicable fees.

You can pay multiple Invoices over the timeframe of one project
Employers are welcome to request Freelancers to create multiple Invoices over the timeframe of a project.
- Option 1: Multiple Invoices for one project
For example, you agree to pay a Freelancer $1,000 (total) over the timeframe of a project.
- After the Freelancer completes "Phase 1" of the project work, he or she creates an Invoice for $500.
- You pay the $500 Invoice to Guru.com, and we immediately send the $500 payment to the Freelancer.
- After the Freelancer completes "Phase 2" (or the final phase), he or she creates an Invoice for $500.
- You pay the final $500 Invoice to Guru.com, and we immediately send the $500 payment to the Freelancer.
- Option 2: One Invoice for one project
For example, you agree to pay a Freelancer $1,000 (total) for a project.
- The Freelancer completes the project work and creates an Invoice for $1,000.
- You pay the $1,000 Invoice, in full, to Guru.com.
- We immediately send the $1,000 payment to the Freelancer.

Paying Freelancers for repeat projects
If you locate a Freelancer through Guru.com, you must always pay the Freelancer through either SafePay Escrow or Invoicing, even if you do not post the additional project(s) on Guru.com.
To have a Freelancer Invoice you for a project not posted on Guru.com, please tell the Freelancer to follow these steps.
- Sign in to your Guru.com account.
- On the My Admin page, click the "Create Invoice" link.
- Enter the Employer's SafePay Billing Code, and follow the instructions on the remaining pages.

Confirming that we received your Invoice payment
To confirm that we received your Invoice payment:
- Sign in to your Employer account.
- On the My Admin page, click the "Manage Invoices" link.
- Locate the Invoice you wish to check, and look for the status designation.
- Invoices are marked either "Paid" or "Not Paid."

To review the status of a new or old Invoice:
- Sign in to your Employer account.
- On the My Admin page, click the "Manage Invoices" link.
- The Invoice Status column shows the date the Invoice was created and if the Invoice is "Paid" or "Unpaid."
- To review the details of the Invoice, click the "View" button under the Action column.

Employers can only delete paid Invoices. To delete a paid Invoice:
- Sign in to your Employer account.

- In the right corner of the My Admin page, find the text "Loyalty Dollars."
- The amount of Loyalty Dollars you have earned (to date) appears here.
- Next to "Amount Redeemed," you can also view the amount of Loyalty Dollars you have redeemed (to date).

Once you have accumulated Loyalty Dollars, you may apply any amount of your earned Dollars (at any time) to a SafePay Escrow Request or Invoice payment. Use the instructions below to learn how to apply your accumulated Loyalty Dollars to cover all or part of a payment.

When new Loyalty Dollars appear in your account
We calculate and add new Loyalty Dollars to your account after you release funds from an Escrow Request or pay an Invoice. In addition, if you win the daily $100 Loyalty Dollar Sweepstakes, we immediately deposit $100 in bonus Loyalty Dollars into your account.

Do Loyalty Dollars expire?
You must apply Loyalty Dollars to a SafePay Escrow request or Invoice payment within three years of their issue date year. (For example, if you earned $50 in Loyalty Dollars throughout year 2005, those Dollars would expire January 1, 2009.)
If you have Loyalty Dollars that are about to expire, Guru.com will send you a reminder email one month before the expiration date.

How we calculate the Loyalty Dollar Rate
Loyalty Dollar kickback rates start at 1% and increase up to 2%. The rate issued is dependant on the amount of money you have paid through SafePay (via Check, E-check, Wire Transfer, or SafePay Account Funds) within one calendar year (January 1 through December 31).

Fees that are charged to Freelancers
! NOTE: We do not charge Employers any of the fees listed below. We charge all fees (listed below) to the Freelancers. Our service for Employers is absolutely free.
- Project Fee
We charge Freelancers a 5% or 10% Project Fee when you pay an Invoice or release an Escrow payment. We base the fee on the Freelancer's membership level and it is subtracted from the Freelancer's total payment amount. Subscribing (Guru) members pay 5%. Non-subscribing, free (Basic) members pay 10%.
- Escrow Fee
We charge Freelancers a 2% Escrow Fee if you both opted to use our SafePay Escrow service. This 2% Escrow Fee also covers our Mediation and Arbitration services.
- Employer Payment Method Fee
If you pay a Freelancer's Invoice or Escrow request by Credit Card or PayPal, the Freelancer will be charged an extra fee. Pay by Check, E-check, Wire Transfer, or SafePay Account Funds instead to (1) Earn up to 2% money back and chance to win $100 in Guru.com Loyalty Dollars, and (2) Save the Freelancer a fee.
Credit Card Fee: Up to 4%
Credit Card companies charge Freelancers up to a 4% fee when you pay online via Credit Card.
PayPal Fee: 2.5%
If you pay through PayPal, PayPal will charge the Freelancer a 2.5% fee.
- Freelancer Payment Method Fee
Depending on the method a Freelancer has selected to receive payment from Guru.com, we will charge the Freelancer a nominal fee ($0.00 to $3.00).
