About Instant Messengers
What is IM?
Instant messaging (IM) is an online form of communication that allows you to correspond in real-time, via typed text, with another person over the web. When you use an IM program, you are able to connect with an Employer online as quickly as if you were to place a phone call.
Communication with an Employer via an IM system can vastly speed up your rate of communication, and therefore, the time in which it takes to complete a project. Additionally, when you interact with an Employer via IM, you are able to communicate your ideas more succinctly, and are able to clarify any confusion as soon as it arises. This improves the chance that you and the Employer will understand each other well and stay on the same page in terms of the project timeline.
How do I use IM to communicate with Employers?
To get started, you need to select and download an IM program. Learn more about different IM programs below.
- iChat: iChat is an IM program for Mac users included as a part of OS X. Features include instant messaging, click-and-drag file transfer, and full audio / video conferencing capabilities. AOL IM contacts may be seamlessly integrated into iChat by using your AOL account information to sign in. iChat is included with Mac OS X Tiger. Learn more.
- AOL IM: AOL IM is a program primarily found on PCs, but older versions accommodate Mac computers, as well. Using AOL IM, you have access to person-to-person instant messaging, chat room messaging, and the ability to share files peer-to-peer with your "buddies." The latest versions support audio / video conferencing and text messaging to cell phones. AOL IM 6.1 adds a simple option to log all IM conversations and the ability to receive messages while offline. A variation of AOL IM is AIM express, an IM program that does not require you to install software, but which you can access with a standard Internet connection via PC or Mac. You can download AOL IM free and learn more here.
- MSN / Windows Live Messenger: MSN / Windows Live Messenger is the default IM client included with Windows. In addition to instant messaging, audio / video messaging capabilities, newer versions also allow PC-to-phone communication and Yahoo! IM compatibility. A simple web version of MSN Messenger, for text chat use only, is available for use by Windows and Mac users. You can download Windows Live Messenger free for PC or Mac.
- Yahoo! IM: In addition to instant messaging, Yahoo! IM also offers PC-to-phone service, file transfers, webcam hosting, and chat rooms in various categories. A partnership with MSN / Windows Live Messenger allows you simultaneous access to contacts on both services. Yahoo! Messenger offers a simple web based chat client, as well. You can download Yahoo! IM for Windows free and learn more here. Older, more limited versions are also available for Mac users.
- Skype: Skype is a voice service that works very much like a traditional telephone call, only via your computer. It also incorporates video capability. Skype users may call each other without any charge. If one party uses a standard phone, Skype calls are billed on a per minute basis, although certain types of calls are eligible for monthly plans. You can download Skype and learn more here (including rate information).

Membership expiration
If your Guru or Guru VENDOR membership is about to expire, you will receive notices both two weeks and one day before the expiration date, reminding you to renew your subscription. If you choose not to renew, your membership will revert to Basic.
In this case, only your 10 Work Samples highest in order will remain visible to Employers; however, we will not delete your other files from our system, but move them into "hibernation" mode. If you renew your membership within three months of its expiration, the "hibernating" files will be restored to your Work Sample page; if you choose not to renew within three months of expiration, the "hibernating" files will be deleted permanently. You will be reminded of your "hibernating" files before the three months is up, via email alerts as well as on your "Manage Work Sample Files" page.

New Feature coming soon — Guru Match in Employer Searches! |
The new Guru Match will dynamically renumber profiles to highlight an Employer's top matches every time he or she performs a search.
Benefits for Employers:
- By numbering the results of every search sequentially, Guru Match will eliminate confusion for Employers who see gaps in rank in their search results when they apply filters.
- Guru Match will give Employers a clear view of the Freelancers who best meet their search criteria and project requirements.
Benefits for Freelancers:
- Guru Match can give your profile an apparent boost.
- If your profile is ranked #39 in your skill category but comes up first for a certain set of search parameters, your profile will be matched as #1.
- With Rank, there are 17 profiles ranked #1 (one for each main skill category). With Guru Match, there will be almost an infinite number of profile matches at #1 (one for each possible combination of search parameters).
NOTE: Guru Match will appear only in the results records of an Employer's search. Your profile rank will not change. It will remain displayed on your profile and proposals and continues to show your position within your main skill category. See differences between rank and Guru Match.

Rank assignment
Guru Match assignments
Quality Score calculation
Viewing your rank
The money you earn and your success in customer relations affect your profile's rank within your main skill category and its Guru Match position in an Employer's search results. Your rank and Guru Match are both based on the calculation of your profile's Quality Score and how it compares to the scores of your competition.
Having a high Quality Score:
- Will give you an exposure advantage with a high Guru Match in Employers' search results. More Employers will view profiles with high match numbers. (View how Employers search for Freelancers.)
- Will help you to secure additional projects from Employers. Employers are more apt to hire Freelancers with a visible and positive track record.
Rank assignment
Your rank is based on the calculation of your profile's Quality Score and how it compares to the scores of your competition.
Profiles get sorted in four ways; then the sequential rank is applied to the results. Rank assignment occurs every 24 hours.
First sort = main skill category.
Second sort = membership type.
Guru and Guru VENDOR members are ranked first. Basic members are ranked second.
Third sort = invoice activity.
Profiles with SafePay payments within the last six months are ranked above profiles with no recent payment activity.
Fourth sort = Quality Score, highest first.
NOTES:
- If you have two profiles with the same main skill category and membership type, those profiles will share payment statistics and have the same Quality Score and, therefore, the same Rank.
- If two or more Freelancers share the same membership type, invoice activity and Quality Score, their profiles will be sorted by last sign in date (most recent first) and then assigned sequential rank numbers.
- Guru or Guru VENDOR profiles with no payments in the last six months and those with Quality Scores of zero will be sorted by last sign in date and given a rank number but will be ranked below Guru and Guru VENDOR members with recent payments and positive Quality Scores.
- Basic profiles with no payments in the last six months and those with Quality Scores of zero will be given a rank of "N/A" and sorted by last sign in date in search results, displayed below Basic profiles with recent payments and positive Quality Scores.
- The Quality Scores of profiles with no invoice activity in the last six months will not be displayed in search results or on profile pages. Instead, the message "No recent activity" will be displayed.
- Profiles that are hidden or inactive do not receive a rank assignment.
Guru Match assignments - coming soon!
When your profile appears in Employers' search results, it will be given a sequential match number. The Guru Match numbering will be dynamically generated for every new search performed and will effectively remove gaps in rank numbering and duplicate ranks in search results.

Quality Score calculation
Your Quality Score is an objective measure of your business success. The Freelancers with the highest Quality Scores do the best job of satisfying the needs of Employers.
Your Quality Score is the product of three core indicators:
- Customer Acquisition Rate — A Freelancer's success rate of receiving payment from a newly acquired Employer after submitting a proposal for a project.
- Customer Earning Rate — How much money a Freelancer earns per Employer per month through SafePay within the last 12 months.
- Customer Retention Rate — How well a Freelancer retains relationships with Employers over time.
| Customer Acquisition Rate (CAR) |
Customer Earning Rate (CER) |
Customer Retention Rate (CRR) |
 |
 |
 |
Definition: The CAR calculation divides the number of your successful proposals (out of the last 100 you submitted to new Employers) by the number of successful proposals submitted by all Freelancers for the same 100 projects.
Successful proposals are those that result in at least one paid invoice. New Employers are those who have not previously paid you.
Result: A percentage that identifies your success rate in acquiring paying Employers. |
Definition: The CER calculation divides your cumulative earnings per Employer over the last 12 months by the number of months in each Employer relationship to produce a series of earnings rates per Employer. The sum of these rates is then divided by the total number of Employers who have paid you over the last 12 months, limited to a minimum of 3.
Relationship months count the number of months since you received your first paid invoice from an Employer.
Result: The average of your earnings per Employer over the last 12 months. |
Definition: The CRR calculation divides your earning rate per Employer over the last 12 months by the sum of your earning rates (all Employers) to produce your rate of money earned per Employer. This rate is multiplied by the total number of months of the Employer relationship over all time to produce a CRR per Employer. The CRRs per Employer are then added for an overall CRR.
Relationship months count the number of months since you received your first paid invoice from an Employer.
Result: The sum of your retention rates per Employer reveals how well you manage your client relationships over time. |
