New Profiles on Guru

For quite some time we’ve been listening to your requests for a better way to market all of your skills in one profile. Your feedback has sparked ideas and prompted us to consider every aspect of Guru.com. In response, we’ve made countless changes to the design and refined our plans for the future. Thanks to you, we now have a platform that is a joy to use and will be scalable for years to come! In the weeks and months ahead we’ll share more of the work we’ve done, starting with new Freelancer profiles. Let us know what you think along the way, as we’ll continue to make changes based on your feedback. We can’t wait to hear what you think!

What Can I Do With My New Profile?

Your new Guru profile allows you to break free of subcategories and express who you are and what you do. Brand yourself. Define unique services you want to offer. Organize all of your work into collections and use them to support your services and applications.

When Will I See My New Profile?

Beginning in October your new profile will be available for you to start building. We’ll move some of your current information and work samples over, but you will need to reorganize it in a way that makes sense to you. In December, we’ll retire the old Guru profiles and release the new profiles to Employers, so be sure to take full advantage of this time! Look for a series of emails and blog posts that will guide you along the way.

**Update 10/28/13** New Guru profiles will be available to Freelancers the week of Jan. 21, 2014. Learn More

Finally! I hope the portfolio handling will be easier also. I’ve been asking GURU to do this for years.

      Hi, Laura!

We did also revamp the portfolio as part of the new profile. Can’t wait for you to see. 🙂

I’m excited about the changes, too! I hope it won’t affect the membership structure, and that it will allow members who are currently using “free membership” status to continue.

      Hi, Marion!

Current “Basic” members will be able to continue using Guru free of charge.
We’ll be announcing the details of the new membership options at a later date, as we’re still finalizing them. What I can tell you with certainty is that the membership price range won’t change. Hope this helps put you at ease 🙂

    Hi Anna,

How will the fees for a membership be decided? Currently, we pay PER Category we want to bid on (for example: Cat 01 = Websites and Ecommerce, Cat 02 = Graphic Design & Multimedia).

    01. IF this new profile will allow us to bid on various projects from both of the types of projects listed about will there ONLY be ONE membership fee for freelancers?

    02. If so, what is the fee?

    03. Will employers post to various categories, but freelancers and vendors no longer have to have various memberships to bid on them?

I have memberships expiring before the end of the year, I like to know if I have to spend the money or not to renew both of my category memberships.

    Thanks for your help.

      Hi Jon,
We’re still working out the details of the new membership structure, but as soon as it’s finalized we’ll post it. What I can tell you with certainty is that the price range won’t change.

      To answer your questions,
      1. Yes. Each subscribing Freelancer will still pay one membership fee per profile. Since you’ll only have one profile, each Freelancer will have only one membership fee.
      2. We’re working out the details, but we’ll let you know soon!
      3. Yes. Employers will still post projects in categories. However you will be able to apply to any project, regardless of category.

I liked this feature most: “Yes. Employers will still post projects in categories. However you will be able to apply to any project, regardless of category.”

I agree 101% with Omvisions!! I can finally bid on all those jobs I’ve been missing out on all these years because I couldn’t afford to pay for memberships under dozens of categories!! I was stuck being labeled a “virtual assistant” even though my assistance ranges from admin to marketing, graphics & website design, & more… all done virtually. I love this change!! This might be the first change I’ve actually been excited over! 🙂

Look nice, I like the new layout. Curious… will the hero image allow animated images or does it have to be static?

    • Anna

      Hi, Maarit!

Yes, for your profile image you can upload the same formats as today, it’s just a larger image. So you’ll want to change that image if you don’t want it to appear pixelated.

Will this be just a format change to how freelancers are marketed to employers as against the paying subscribers?
    Just curious

Abraham, this is so much more! This is one of the first of many steps we’re taking to totally revamp the way Guru.com freelancers can find work, manage work, and get paid. It includes a format change, as well as functionality additions and changes.

    Hi!
    This is great news!
Now since there will only be one profile for all with all subcategories included, will the number of free bids for basic members increase in the same proportion?
I guess this answer will be awaited by all basic members!

We’re still working out the details of the new membership structure, so I don’t yet have an answer for you. But what I can tell you is that the price ranges will remain the same. Hope this helps!

    Hi,

Appreciate this update of Guru. I also would like Guru to offer free expert rating tests to freelancers like some other freelance sites. Thanks

      Hi, Nadeem!

Right now we have a promotion where you can take free skill tests, whether you are a Basic member or a paying member! Click on “Manage Skill Tests” and choose the test you want to take. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you. The inability to show all my talents without paying for individual subscriptions for each was the main thing keeping me from getting a longer subscription to this site.

So If I am currently paying for profiles in sales & admin, I will be able to also bid on website design or marketing projects with the new all in one?

  11. Rocky

Looking forward to see the new design. However, are you guys also looking at restoring bids for cancelled and closed projects? This will be great if you can do that. Freelancers like me waste too many bids every month on client closed and cancelled projects.

Will the ranking system remain similar and be sorted by category? I’d hate to lose my spot in the top 10 writers on Guru if it all gets mixed up together:)

    • Anna

      Hi, Daisy!

The ranking system will remain similar and still be sorted by category. The difference will come when an Employer searches for a specific keyword. Then, what will show in the results are services containing that keyword, rather than complete freelancer profiles that contain the keyword somewhere within. As the new profile becomes available to you, it’ll be important that you include relevant keywords in your service titles, descriptions, and tags, and that you attach work collections that also contain that keyword to show higher in search results. This will all become more clear in the next few weeks as we release the profiles and send out more “how-to” communications. I hope this helps for now!

    Hi Anna!

I would like to report an elaborate fraud scheme. The person got my name from Guru, but Guru has no responsibility, since he didn’t go through Guru. I just want to warn other freelancers. I have all the details including his emails and his fraudulent check.

    Thanks,

    Karl

      Hi, Karl!

Thanks for letting us know. You could post this in the Guru Answers community rather than on the blog, so others can write about their experiences, too. If you’d like to report him, you can contact our support team (http://www.guru.com/pro/contact.cfm) and they can look into the potential fraud. Thanks!

I sure hope we will reserve our right to decide whether or not our profile will be used in this way in the first place and how.

I’m really worried about the privacy issues.

    Thx.

      Hi, Nebojsa!

No need to worry, you will have the same privacy options as you do now. You will be able to choose what information you share on your profile, as well as whether your profile is public or hidden. The new profiles are designed for you to have better and easier ways to show all of your work off and apply to any project you want. How you use it is up to you!

Does this mean we’ll also be able to pay for one membership and work across categories, or are you going to continue to charge for each area? We’ve stopped renewing because your model is so outdated compared to others.

    Wow, great going Guru team.
I was waiting from long time for this to happen, seriously one can sometimes do more then whats listed in just 5 categories.
I hope the new changes will be all that is expected and do not come with something that creates another problem.

I don’t usually look forward to the websites I use changing things, but this change excites me. I always hated that I was so limited in how I marketed myself here. I don’t want more than one profile. I didn’t like how that system worked, so I never used it. I’m actually excited to read about these changes and simply cannot wait for them to take effect. Will my profile differ from paying members, though? If I am not paying, how limited will I be in how my profile looks?

      Hi Dawn,

I’m very happy to hear that the new profile is something you’re excited about!

We are still working out the details of the membership structure, but I can tell you that the look of your profile will not be limited if you don’t pay! We are encouraging each and every Guru.com user, whether they pay or not, to add as much of their work as they can, and create as many services as they want. You will be able to use your profile to market all of your services and skills, and to show off all of your work in a way that is easy for Employers to view. The only difference will be that only paying members will have a link to their personal website displayed. The rest of the differences will be apparent in the number of bids, and the ability to initiate certain actions.

Finally! That’s exactly was Guru was missing for a long time for those who are a free user. But could you take this one step further and do not send this information each day? Really, I received it yesterday, today… Waiting for identical message tomorrow to get in my inbox 😉 Once is alright, really!

      Hi Elwira,

I think I know what happened:
If you are subscribed to the blog, then you received our email message (titled, “One Profile, Endless Opportunities”) that we sent to all freelance users, as well as this blog post (titled, “The Journey Ahead, Starting With New Freelancer Profiles”). These are two separate messages we put out to make sure all of our audiences receive the great news! While I can see how receiving two similar messages in your inbox could be a little frustrating, I hope you’ll understand this reasoning 🙂

I used to use GURU quite a bit and had great feedback on my profile. Will the new profiles display total feedback ratings? I’m wanting to use GURU again but in order to view my feedback at all, one has to click on my feedback tab and then click “all time”. I think the all-time feedback should be reflected and showcased.
