What is Labor Day?
Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September. Labor Day celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers. It was first nationally recognized in 1894 to placate unionists following the Pullman Strike. Now that there are fewer and fewer union workers, the holiday is now viewed as a time for barbeques and the end of summer vacations.
The year in which the 8-hour day was firmly established was 1916 with the passage of the Adamson Act. This was the first federal law regulating hours of workers in private companies.
