About

Looking for part time software engineering projects that can be performed on nights and weekends.

Jim Altendahl served as a Software Architect at Pitney Bowes, Inc., a provider of integrated transportation and logistics management solutions. The role included selection of appropriate architectures and designs to meet the system functional requirements and quality attributes for large scale enterprise shipping and desktop software applications.

Jim began his career as a computer programmer for the Sperry/Unisys Corporation. While at Unisys, a coworker recognized Jim for his strong programming skills and recommended him to his brother-in-law, the president of Vocam Systems. Jim became an original member of Vocam Systems, Inc., a startup company that became successful in the transportation software business and was acquired by Pitney Bowes.

During his 20 year career at Pitney Bowes, Jim was the lead architect, designer, and developer of the Shipment Planning and Rating feature for the SendSuite Shipping Application. The Shipment Planning and Rating feature was responsible for planning the best shipping method, building consolidated shipments and multiple stop loads, assigning carriers and services, computing freight costs, and calculating delivery times. Jim holds three patents for his inventions in shipment planning software designs.

With over 20 years’ experience in the Shipping and Logistics industry, Jim has in-depth domain knowledge of parcel carriers (UPS, FedEx, USPS, etc.) and Less-than-Truck -Load (LTL) carriers. His technical skills include a proficiency in object oriented analysis, design, and programming techniques along with the UML diagramming skills used to document the architectural and design decisions. He has a very strong proficiency in the Microsoft development tools including .NET, C#, C++, and SQL Server.

Jim is near completion of his MS degree in Software Engineering from the University of Saint Thomas, Saint Paul, MN. He holds a BS degree in Computer Science from Saint Cloud State University, Saint Cloud, MN.
