About

A highly experienced and well-rounded international technology leader that can quickly come up speed with your business and technology situation and start creating value.

Originally a software developer for 5 years, I moved into technology program management of large projects and later into technical operations. I became a CTO in 2002 and have since contributed to all manor of C-level work including two periods of P&L ownership and business development. My primary work has been in b2c Internet businesses, although I've had some exposure to retail and b2b. I've also been involved with embedded systems development (networking devices) and in-house developed business accounting systems.

Major accomplishments:
- Various technology contributions to 3 successful startup exits
- As a firmware program manager, delivery of a complete firmware re-architecture involving 55 engineers over 18 months and involving 100 engineering years of work
- Establishing a high-performance offshore technology team in India
- Tech leadership and strategy for the successful $55m acquisition of 3 US-based businesses for an offshore company

I believe all leaders should bring customer-orientation, business acumen and standard management skills to the table. These are "hygiene factors" and are assumed. What differentiates a technology leader is... technology. My contribution to the bottom line is strategy alignment though protecting existing revenue through right-sized risk management and creating new customer-valued products and services. Ultimately, I'm a technologist at heart who has picked up all the required business skills along the way.

Regarding specific technologies, I'm more of an open-source, LAMP advocate but have also spent many years working with Java/Oracle stacks as well. My own curiosity and interests mean I experiment with emerging technologies for business fit, either as business-strategy driven or on the side. I lead by example and remain hands-on with architecture, unplanned downtime events and security.

Regarding process, I'm all about agile and context-sensitive application of the best from XP, Scrum, Lean and Kanban.

Work Terms

Generally pretty flexible.

Timezone: I'm in an EU timezone currently, will probably be in West Coast US later this year. I'm generally available between 8am and 10pm but fully expect occasional odd hours (unplanned downtime event and major software releases!)

Payment terms: Negotiable

Preferred communication style: completely adaptable; I generally spend lots of time in Skype - both chat and voice; using products like basecamp; various wikis; the Google Docs/+ omni-verse; or just plain email.

Travel: I generally enjoy travel and am open to on-location work for up to 3 weeks at a time. I've lived abroad and have worked in many countries and quickly adapt to new cultures. I speak intermediate Spanish.

Time allocation: part or full time is ok; may be limited to part-time if I have another part-time engagement running
