We’re looking for a reliable Python developer or data-processing specialist to assist with extracting and refining a specific subset of NOAA AIS (Automatic Identification System) vessel traffic data.

Scope:

  • Pull AIS data for a defined offshore region and short date range from NOAA’s open-access sources (MarineCadastre / Coast NOAA AIS archives).

  • Filter and aggregate the data to create meaningful summaries of vessel activity within the area of interest.

  • Deliver cleaned datasets and a simple script that can repeat the extraction for other date ranges.

Key skills:

  • Proficiency in Python (pandas, geopandas, shapely, h3 or similar spatial binning).

  • Experience handling large CSV or NetCDF datasets efficiently.

  • Comfort with coordinate systems, spatial filtering, and writing clean, well-documented scripts.

  • Familiarity with NOAA or MarineCadastre data portals is a plus.

Deliverables:

  • Working script and minimal documentation (usage example).

  • Cleaned CSV/Parquet outputs for the specified region and time window.

  • Short read-me or run-log explaining the process and file structure.

We are not looking for web design or front-end work—this is purely data engineering and geospatial processing.

Please include a brief note on your experience handling large public datasets (e.g., NOAA, NASA, USGS, etc.) and your estimated time to complete a first regional extraction.

The files are online. YOU will need to move them to AWS or  somewhere.
