A paralegal cannot give legal advice (such as explaining your rights or telling you what to say in response to pleadings you have received) or help represent you, no matter what state the case(s) are in, however, a paralegal can set up the response pleadings, type in what you want to say, and help you find the right addresses to send them to, etc. Many people find, even after receiving excellent paralegal services, that they will need an attorney in their matter, even though they cannot afford an expensive one. Paralegals are not allowed to negotiate or set attorneys' rates or hire an attorney on someone else's behalf. However, I can research and help to get you in contact with attorneys and Legal Aid services (which may be able to assist you by providing a low cost or free / "pro bono" attorney depending on income). There are many, many legal aid options, and sometimes it is difficult to pick out the "real" legal aid office because so many of the websites out there are just referral links that lead nowhere. I read through the information, draw up a document that compares the different options I've found, what requirements they have that apply to you, as well as every bit of contact information and office hours where available.
