What are their problems and goals?
Who are their heroes and villains?
What are their values?
What do they love?
What do they fear?
What motivates them to take action?
Who else has succeeded with your audience, and why?
I know from experience that effective, persuasive writing depends on getting answers to these questions; so I'll make sure I do just that before I start your project. Why go to this trouble? Because the exactly-right words (for your audience) can seal the deal; the not-quite-right words (for your audience) can kill it. Language that attracts and persuades one reader might drive another away. Writing is not a one-size-fits-all business.
