The Masters Woods return

$20/hr Starting at $25

The Masters is unlike any other tournament in golf.

Augusta National, arguably the most prestigious of the majors, returns to the center of the sporting world this weekend as the famous green jacket is up for grabs once more.

Tiger Woods won his first major championship in 1997 in Georgia, and now, 25 years later, he is poised to make an incredible recovery from injury.

However, Woods isn't the only name to keep an eye on.

Let's start at the beginning. Scottie Scheffler is the new world number one, having won three of his previous five races and never finishing worse than T-19th in his six major outings since 2020.

Scheffler said he's been relaxing at home in preparation for his trip to Augusta, where he joked he's already been knocked down a peg or two.

Sky Sports quoted him as saying: "Showing up here has humbled me a couple of times already. I was quickly brought back to reality when the guy who picked me up in the cart this morning named me Xander! It's been fantastic, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the week."

Xander Schauffele is the Xander in question. He finished T3 last year, three strokes behind champion Hideki Matsuyama, and was in contention until a ball went into the water on the 16th hole, but he won gold at the Tokyo Olympics and enters the tournament in good shape.

Matsuyama, the defending champion, put his participation in jeopardy when he withdrew from the Texas Open due to a neck ailment, which could jeopardize his title defense.

Brooks Koepka has four major championships to his credit, but he missed the cut last year and will be looking to rectify that this year after defeating Jon Rahm in the WGC-Match Play quarterfinals.

In each of his last four Masters outings, Rahm has finished in the top ten. However, after winning the US Open last year, the Spaniard has not won a tournament, despite finishing in the top 10 in all four majors last year.

After a tumultuous title defense in 2021, Dustin Johnson failed to make the cut. He had slid out of the top 10 until a strong showing at the WGC-Match Play, and he'll be looking to rediscover the form that saw him win the green jacket in 2020.

Viktor Hovland is ranked fourth in the world, but his poor chipping game could hurt his chances at Augusta, while Collin Morikawa is a strong contender for a third major championship, and Justin Thomas, who won the US PGA Championship in 2017, will be looking for his second major title.
