Discover Muscatine is a leading source for local news and community stories in Muscatine and the surrounding areas. Our commitment to providing timely and impactful news has made us a trusted name among residents. In the past, we have had a single, locally present reporter; however, with a change in staff, we would like to take a new approach, more similar to how the marketing side of our business operates.

Your primary responsibility will be to create a variety of stories ranging from local government meetings to uplifting public interest pieces. Your work will contribute significantly to our mission of delivering comprehensive and compelling local news coverage.

Key Monthly Responsibilities:

  • Government Meeting Summaries including: 4 City Council meeting summaries, 4 County Board of Supervisor meeting summaries, 2 School Board meeting summaries.
  • Public Interest Stories: Craft 15-20 positive stories per month highlighting notable individuals, events, or achievements within the Muscatine community and surrounding areas. These stories should capture the essence of the community's spirit and achievements. They will generally be based on interviews conducted on our morning show, Muscatine Today, along with notes/info from our local team; however, you will have the ability to contact subjects for more information for the story.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with our editorial team to align your stories with our content calendar and publication standards. Utilize competitor stories and our internal notes to enrich your content and provide unique angles.
  • Content Creation: Create a coordinated social media post for the Discover Muscatine social media channels.

Note on AI use: We are comfortable with a creator using quality AI prompts to create drafts of articles that are refined for final use.

Requirements:
  • Proven experience as a journalist, reporter, or content creator, with a strong portfolio showcasing your work.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret and summarize complex information in an accessible manner.
  • Strong research skills and attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Technical proficiency to work remotely and submit content in various formats.
Summary:
You will create 4-5 pieces of written content focusing on local news per week for the local community audience.
