My job is to design the product in a way that is - easy to manufacture - Have reasonable strength - easy to use - whose spare parts are readily available in the market - Have easy maintenance - aesthetically attractive - low cost After CAD designing, I supervise the manufacturing of the design as well, which helps me make the design more efficient both in fabrication and cost. During my undergrad, I used to design and fabricate robots, and 3D printers/CNC as extra-curricular activities.
