As Cartographers I apply many design principles when compiling maps and constructing page layouts. The main design principles are legibility, visual contrast, figure-ground, hierarchical organization, and balance. To see and understand the relative importance of the content on the map and on the page and lead the map reader through the contents to determine the importance of things and find patterns.

The technique of using maps given by geographic information systems (GIS) on the Internet, more especially the World Wide Web, is known as Web mapping or online mapping. A web map, often known as an online map, is both delivered and consumed, making it more than merely web cartography; it is a service that allows users to select what the map will display. 

I create an interactive web map display of geographic data that can be used to tell stories and answer questions. A base map, a set of data layers (many of which feature interactive pop-up windows with data information), an extent, and navigation capabilities to pan and zoom are all included in a map.
