The ensuing fight in Ukraine is "not a war but genocide", Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko has told Sky's special correspondent Alex Crawford.

Speaking from the capital, Mr Klitschko said Russian forces were continuing to send kamikaze drones and missiles to his hometown.

"People are very angry. It's not a war it is genocide against Ukraine, against the Ukrainian people from Russia," he said.

He went on to say the latest explosion had destroyed a kindergarten and three schools and  came just four minutes after air raid sirens were sounded through the region.

Asked about comments made by former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev in which he said British officials were a "legitimate military target", he added: "The Russians are upset because Ukraine receives a lot of support.

"I want to say to the British people, to British politicians, thank you very much for the support.

"We are fighting not just for our homeland. We are fighting for democracy, for human rights. Russia doesn't have that.

"Everyone in Ukraine is a target from the Russians. If anyone doesn't agree with Russia then they are an enemy.

"Russian politics is terrorist politics. You see the impact here."
