Proofreading with precision and style

$40/hr Starting at $40

Editors and proofreaders are widespread in the freelancing world, but I focus on enhancing the readability of technical or otherwise specialized text. I handle everything from typographical fixes to grammatical tweaks, up to and including stylistic advice and rewriting or restructuring. My career is in science and programming, but I have always been known in my workplaces as the person to go to for proofreading and rewriting. My mother was a legal secretary who taught me to read at home before I went to school, and throughout my early life I was interested in the mechanics of spelling and grammar -- even sentence diagramming. That's probably one reason I ultimately ended up as a scientist. But the lingering effect is that I don't simply see typos and grammar mistakes or awkward phrasings; I constantly correct them in my mind, and think of how they would have worked better and why. Because my husband of many years has a literature degree and is himself an educator and technical writer, we've even been known to have those discussions out loud! I am giving you a sense of my aptitude and passion for proofreading and writing, rather than my experience, because my work in editing has usually been incidental to other jobs -- polishing grant proposals or scientific articles, writing important internal business documents, and so forth. I don't yet have a history of freelance editing for hire. However, I have done freelance web development and programming, so I can assure you that I am experienced and professional in communicating with a client and meeting deadlines with quality work.
