Vladimir Putin congratulated Emmanuel Macron on re-election as president of France, Russian news agencies reported. In Sunday's vote, Macron defeated the pro-Russian leader of the National Union, Marine Le Pen. 

Vladimir Putin  sent a congratulatory telegram to the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, on his victory in the presidential election. "I sincerely wish you success in your state activities, as well as good health and well-being," wrote Putin.

President Emmanuel  Macron  won the French presidential election on Sunday with a score of 58.54 percent. 41.46 percent voted for Marine Le Pen, the National Union candidate. - reported the French Ministry of the Interior.

Election absenteeism was 28.01 percent, which means that 13.6 million French people registered on the election lists did not vote this Sunday. The media in France reminds that this is the highest absenteeism since 1969. Just over two million people went to the polls but threw in a blank ballot (4.57%).

Congratulatory letters for Macron were also sent, among others, by US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. "France is our oldest ally and an important partner in the international arena," wrote Biden. Xi Jinping stressed that during Macron's first five-year term, the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and France maintained a "high degree of development" under the leadership of both leaders.
