Russia and Ukraine: Boris Johnson meets

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.The Prime Minister's Office said the visit was a "show of solidarity" with the Ukrainian people.After the meeting, the British government announced the provision of 120 armored vehicles and anti-ship missile systems to Ukraine.On the Ukrainian side, senior officials appreciated the UK's support for their country during the Russian invasion.The British Prime Minister's visit to the Ukrainian capital was not announced in advance, and the first indication of Johnson's presence in Kyiv came in a tweet via Twitter published by the Ukrainian embassy in London, which included a picture of Johnson's meeting with Zelensky. 

In a statement after the meeting, Johnson praised what he described as "President Zelensky's steadfast leadership and the heroism and courage of the Ukrainian people." 

Johnson said Ukraine had "defyed the odds and pushed the Russian forces away from the gates of Kyiv"."I made it clear today that the UK stands firmly with the Ukrainians in this ongoing conflict, and we will remain so for the long term.""We are increasing our military and economic support and calling for a global coalition to end this tragedy and for Ukraine to survive and thrive as a free and sovereign nation," Johnson said.The Prime Minister also announced more economic support for Ukraine, bringing the total British loan guarantees to Kiev to more than $1 billion.

In a video address to President Zelensky, Johnson said the Ukrainians "showed the courage of the lions, and you, Volodymyr, were the roar of those lions."Once again, Johnson reiterated that the UK and other pro-Ukrainian countries would continue to tighten economic sanctions on Moscow.The British Prime Minister said: "In a few hours I have been able to see so much of the wonderful beauty of your country. I have also come to see the tragic aftermath of the war. That war which is unforgivable and wholly unwarranted."

Zelensky praised the United Kingdom's "decisive and substantial" support for his country, and urged other Western allies to step up pressure on Moscow."We have to increase the pressure in the form of sanctions," Zelensky said. "It is time for a complete ban on Russian energy sources. They should increase the amount of weapons they support us with."In a Facebook post, Andrey Sibiha, deputy chief of Zelensky's office, said: "The UK leads Ukraine in defense, leads the anti-war coalition and leads sanctions against Russian aggression."
