Severna Park golf gets individual champi

$20/hr Starting at $25

Golfers whispered when the score went on the board.

“How do you shoot a 70?” “How?” “That kid’s insane.” “Somebody got a 70.”

DA Regala knew he won his first county championship, his white whale, at least an hour before most other Anne Arundel County golfers did. The Severna Park senior’s foursome strolled off what had been a difficult course long before everyone else. The score impressed him less than it did others. For him, it was more than overcoming the tough greens that’d hampered so many others’ scores on Wednesday.

After two seasons of settling for silver, Regala struck gold, becoming the Anne Arundel boys golf champion.

“It’s something I always wanted to do and I knew I could do it,” Regala said. “I just had to come out and put a good score on the board.”

Regala isn’t the lone Falcon at the top. Nicol Chovanec captured first place for the girls, shooting an 84. The freshman duked it out with a more experienced foe in Broadneck’s Summer Stroop, who carried a slight lead around the 11th hole but slipped behind the young Severna Park golfer, finishing with an 86.

It is the first time in recent memory that the two Anne Arundel champions hail from the same school.

The greens rolled fast, made firm by heavy use before Wednesday’s tournament. Chovanec wasn’t impervious to the circumstances, but Severna Park coach Pete Buck felt great pride in the way his young champion prevailed. It was the way she’d stepped up to team play this fall.
