DOHA (Reuters) - The captains of England, Wales, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany and Denmark have given up wearing the LGBT badge during the World Cup, seven European associations said in a joint statement on Monday after FIFA issued a yellow card to any offending player.

FIFA threatened to issue a yellow card to any player who wore the multicolored armband, which was presented as supporting diversity and inclusion.

England captain Harry Kane spoke of his desire to wear the armband in Monday's Group B match against Iran.

But the FA said in a statement, hours before the start of the confrontation at Khalifa International Stadium, "FIFA was very clear that sports sanctions would be applied if our leaders put the badge during the match.

"As a national federation, we cannot put players in a situation where penalties, including yellow cards, can be applied to them, so we have asked our captains not to wear the badge in World Cup matches."
