We start our tour of British newspapers from the Financial Times, which published an article written by Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency, on the global energy crisis.

The writer tried to shed light on the most important facts of the current crisis, which resulted in part from the war that Russia sparked in Ukraine.

Birol believes that there are three myths about the global energy crisis that we are currently experiencing.

He pointed out that the first myth relates to allegations that the global energy crisis is in Russia's favor on the grounds that it has caused the prices of energy products to rise globally,

But he suggested that this is not true at all, as he believes that Russia is reaping gains from this crisis in the short term, while Moscow's position will become more difficult over time if the world continues to suffer from the deficit in fossil fuels because of Russia

Suggested stories end

Russia may reap a lot of revenue from oil and natural gas in the short term, but in the long run it will lose confidence and its share of the market, according to the author.

Energy prices: Record rise in gas prices in Europe as Russia continues to shut down Nordstream1Russia and Ukraine: G7 sets a ceiling for Russian oil prices

He pointed to the possibility of losing confidence in Russia as the largest supplier of natural gas in the world, as it is threatened that the world will consider it an unreliable resource

Moscow may lose a large share of the energy market worldwide, which may result from Russia’s failure to achieve optimal exploitation of its natural resources due to the absence of European technology that Russia is indispensable for in extracting oil and natural gas, in addition to the inability to obtain them amid imposition Severe penalties for the country.

The writer also pointed out that the second fallacy about the global energy crisis is that it results from the trend towards clean energy, as some believe that the current trend by the countries of the major economies and the laws issued to support clean energy and clamp down on fossil fuel extraction activities have exacerbated the crisis.

He believed that the opposite is true, as most of the developed world states that it is likely that they are too late in turning to clean energy, and that they should have started building solar and wind energy plants years ago, in addition to improving and supporting the capabilities of nuclear power plants.

The author of the article emphasized that most of the leaders of the developed world suggested that the move strongly towards renewable energy should have started several years ago and that the expansion of the use of clean energy would have greatly contributed to alleviating the current energy crisis.

The third myth is that the global energy crisis may set back the fight against climate change.

But the author of the article Birol suggested that this proposition is completely incorrect, and that the current crisis has revealed the fragility and unsustainability of the energy system, which calls for reconsidering the speed with which the world is moving towards alternative energy.

He stated that the European Union continues to expand its renewable energy goals, reduce energy consumption, and allocate a lot of resources to achieve those goals.

The United States also included references to a focus on renewable energy in its "lowering inflation" law, which mandates the development of a wide range of clean energy production technologies.
