Ukraine: The Latest

$10/hr Starting at $25

Every weekday the Telegraph's top journalists analyse the Russian invasion of Ukraine from all angles and tell you what you need to know.

Today on Ukraine: The Latest, we bring you news from across Ukraine, talk Ukrainian politics with Professor Olga Onuch and, continuing our week of stories focusing on the abduction of Ukrainian children, David interviews our Russia correspondent Nataliya Vasilyeva about Russia’s ombudswoman for children’s rights, Maria Lvova Belova.

Brussels Correspondent Joe Barnes begins by reporting on the mysterious fire at an ammunition depot in occupied Crimea.

It’s believed to be one of Moscow’s largest ammunition dumps on the peninsula and is right in the southeastern corner so well out of range of any of the known weapons that Ukraine operates, like the Storm Shadow or the HIMARS.

So there’s a lot of mystery around it. The Moscow-backed head of Crimea’s government first warned that the fire had broken out in the early hours of the morning and it basically took local authorities and firefighters about four hours to get the fire under control. Temporary shelters have been set up as residents from four local villages were evacuated: some 2,000 residents.

I think the other thing that’s probably important to say is Russia didn’t say what was being stored there.

Turning to the grain deal, Assistant Comment Editor Francis Dearnley speaks about Kenya’s reaction to the news that Russia has pulled out of the arrangement with Ukraine:

Kenya’s government has called it a ‘stab in the back’ for drought hit countries. The country belongs to a region experiencing one of the worst droughts in decades. More than 50 million people across Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Sudan are in need of food aid because of successive years of failed rains.

I spoke last week about the UN report into hunger, which just shows how severe the international climate is on these matters. So the grain deal really, really matters. To African nations, the ‘Global South’, more broadly, and to Western countries too; all will be impacted by this at a time of very high inflation in many economies.

Now, Russia has issued an ultimatum on the deal. It says it will refuse to restart talks on the initiative unless the UN concedes to its demands by October. But Turkish President Erdogan has told reporters he believes that Putin wants to continue the agreement and they will discuss the renewal of the deal when they meet in person next month.

War in Ukraine is reshaping our world. Every weekday the Telegraph’s top journalists analyse the invasion from all angles - military, humanitarian, political, economic, historical - and tell you what you need to know to stay updated.
