Former President Trump sent a message calling on Republicans to rally around McCarthy, but his appeal did not succeed in persuading conservative lawmakers to change their stance.

The appointed speaker of the House of Representatives needs 218 votes in order to assume the position, and this number may change in the event that some representatives abstain from voting.

McCarthy lost because twenty Republicans preferred to vote for Florida Rep. Byron Donalds.
