Wildfire spreading out of control in Coq

$30/hr Starting at $30

A wildfire sparked in the Minnekhada Regional Park in Coquitlam on Saturday morning is now spreading out of control.

According to the B.C. Wildfire Service, the blaze has grown from two hectares on Sunday morning to 11 hectares on Sunday afternoon and is out of control. This came a day after Metro Vancouver said that thanks to the early efforts of fire crews the blaze was under control and not spreading.

Minnekhada Regional Park is a 200-hectare natural park in northeast Coquitlam alongside the Pitt River and adjacent to farm land.

The B.C. Wildfire Service is working with Metro Vancouver and Coquitlam Fire and Rescue to contain the blaze and has referred all questions to Metro Vancouver

On Saturday morning, when the fire was first detected, the B.C. Wildfire Service had sent one initial attack crew of three people and two helicopters to help battle the fire. By Sunday, there were 23 firefighters on site who assisted by two helicopters, dealing with the fire in steep terrain.

Postmedia News is waiting for an update from Metro Vancouver. The park remains closed
