About

I'm an engineer who loves what I do. I stride to help my clients create the best possible project that they can envision.

My name is James Reinke. I'm 31 years old, and I've been programming since the age of 17. I attended Pomona College and studied computer science and German literature. I have a dog that is 8 years old, with whom I got on hikes with almost every day. Furthermore, I love freelancing, as it gives me the opportunity to work on my time and make time for those things in my life that are also important. I'm passionate about what I do. I love the technologies that I work with and the ways that they force me to think logically and solve interesting problems. Even the most benign freelance job could be an interesting opportunity to use a complex technology and interface with an interesting and excited clients.

So, I studied German literature and computer science, and had several internships with major companies before I graduated, but when I graduated, I decided that I didn't want to work for a major tech company and decided to tutor and teach, which is what I've been doing since graduation. I've been programming on my own, learning new technologies, developing my own frameworks and libraries for others to use, and I take pride in the quality of my code.

I'm most interested in developing good relationships with my clients. I've always loved interfacing with people (one reason I decided to teach). Furthermore, I have two people who help me along with the business. I'm not sure what to call their titles, as they do various jobs, including replying to clients, finding graphic designers and other specialists to get jobs done, and everyday requirements of the business. Likewise, I couldn't run this freelance business without them.

I'm warm, friendly, and easy to work with. In college, I was more concerned with partying and hanging out with people; however, I've matured a bit and have now put more focus into my career.

Work Terms

I usually work from the hours of 12 pm—9pm, unless I get caught up with another obligation, in which case I will add additional hours to another day that week. I check my email constantly, and I suggest that me and my client video chat regularly to make sure the project is moving in the right direction. Sometimes clients don't know exactly what they want, and that is what I'm especially good at, collaborating with them to help them develop a vision for their app/website that coincides with what they really want.

Sometimes it's hard to know what you want when you don't know what technologies exist. That is where I come in. For instance, in college I specialized in natural language processing (NLP), which is a field that specializes in the computational understanding of natural language, and how to utilize that understanding to do interesting things, like translate languages, write automated messages, check for spam accounts, and other numerous things. The possibilities are endless. I have particular interests in cryptography and natural language processing, and I can advise clients how they might utilize these fields to create an even better application than they envisioned.

A good project requires constant communication, and you will always have me availability at all hours of the day, even though I might be talking on my cell phone while hiking my dog. Constant communication is key. One thing I do prefer is one Zoom call versus 15 emails. That way we can discuss things in real time and answer questions quickly and efficiently, although, I will be glued to my email.

The price of the project changes as the expectations of the project changes. I bill hourly, and I want to make sure that the client is well-informed about the shape of the project at all steps in the process. I'm easy to get along with, and I look forward to hearing from you and your interesting idea that you would like to come alive.
