Born and raised in Uganda, Joseph Mugisha studied at Nkumba University School of Art and Design, Entebbe where in 2002, he graduated suma cum laude with a bachelors in fine Arts majoring in sculpture and painting. He was then retained to teach sculpture and drawing, a stint which lasted for four years. He eventually left the school to embark full time on a career in Illustration portrait painting and to be part of management of the local chapter of Uganda Artists Association at the time. In 2008 he moved to the United States with his wife. In 2014 he completed an MFA in animation and visual effects at the Academy of Art University with a major in 3D modeling. Today he lives and manages his home studio in Methuen, Massachusetts doing freelance figurative work ranging from traditional illustration to digital sculpture.
