Quinton Reed, a senior at the University of Montevallo, is studying English with a Writing minor. His interest in writing started at the age of eight, and it has assisted him in overcoming difficulties in central auditory processing and verbal communication. This relationship between language and disabilities inspired him to analyse the meaning, nature, and consequences of disability as a social construct through a literary lens. Furthermore, he explores the effect of verbal communication on the written language, and signs’ capacities of multiple meanings. He has volunteered as an administrator for an independent writer’s community website, Visionary Tales (http://visionary-tales.com), where he worked as a moderator and administrator from 2012-2016. He has also worked a transcriber of lectures for Disability Student Services at his university, and as the editor for Gold Orchid Publishing since 2014. As an editor, he juggled between differences in UK and US grammar, and performed substantive editing on the fiction of native speakers of Urdu, Norwegian, and French. Reed strives to make his skills in writing of further use by working in medical writing. Specifically, he is interested in editing the research of those who come from a non-English-speaking background and preparing new reports and information in such a way that it is both well-represented and accessible to those less familiar with medical language. Outside of his studies, he enjoys studying zoology, and writing music and poetry.
