What are project fees?

We charge a 4.5% or 9% project fee from your payments before transferring them to your cash account. We base the fee on your membership level and subtract it from your total payment amount. Additionally, a 2.95% payment processing fee is deducted to cover credit card and PayPal fees as well as costs to collect and process the payment.

The total fee deducted from your payment will be either 7.45% (4.5% project fee + 2.95% payment processing fee) or 11.95% (9% project fee + 2.95% payment processing fee).

For example:

  1. Your Employer pays your $100.00 Guru Invoice.
  2. We subtract either 7.45% ($7.45) or 11.95% ($11.95) from your total payment amount.
  3. Your payment of $92.55 or $88.05 is credited to your cash account.

How are project fees determined?

The project fee we charge is dependent upon your profile’s membership level when bidding and when submitting a Guru Invoice or SafePay request.

  • We charge a 9% project fee if your profile’s membership level is Basic either when the proposal is submitted or when the invoice or SafePay request is submitted.
  • We charge a 4.5% project fee if your profile’s membership level is Guru or Guru Vendor both when the proposal is submitted and when the invoice or SafePay request is submitted.

What is the project fee for a project that was not posted on Guru.com?

When creating a Guru Invoice for a project that was not posted on Guru.com, you will use the New Project Title option. Because invoices created using the New Project Title option are not associated with a project, we cannot use our standard method of determining the project fee. Instead, we use your membership level when you first made contact with the Employer. Meaning, we use your membership level at the time you submitted your first proposal to one of the Employer’s projects.

  • We charge a 9% project fee if your profile’s membership level was Basic either when you first made contact with the Employer or when the invoice or SafePay request was submitted.
  • We charge a 4.5% project fee if your profile’s membership level was Guru or Guru Vendor both when you first made contact with the Employer and when the invoice or SafePay request was submitted.

My project fee should be 4.5%. Why is it 9%?

The project fee is dependent on your profile’s membership level at two different points in the process; (1) when the proposal was submitted and (2) when the invoice or SafePay request was submitted. If your profile was Basic at either of these points, you will be charged the 9% project fee.

To determine what your membership level was at these points, you’ll have to know,

  • When your profile was upgraded.
    The date that your profile’s membership level was upgraded will be listed on the receipt that was emailed to you at the time of the upgrade. If you no longer have the receipt, you can use your membership’s expiration date to calculate your upgrade date. A monthly membership expires one calendar month from the date of upgrade. An annual membership expires one year from the date of upgrade.
  • When the proposal was submitted.
    The date the proposal was submitted is listed with the project information on the My Projects page.
  • When the invoice or SafePay request was submitted.
    The date the invoice or SafePay request was submitted is listed on the Manage Invoices and Manage SafePay pages respectively.

What are payment processing fees?

A 2.95% payment processing fee is deducted from each payment to cover credit card and PayPal fees as well as costs to collect and process the payment.

The total fee deducted from your payment will be either 7.45% (4.5% project fee + 2.95% payment processing fee) or 11.95% (9% project fee + 2.95% payment processing fee).

  1. Your Employer pays your $100.00 Guru Invoice.

What are transfer method fees?

You can transfer funds from your cash account to your bank, PayPal or Prepaid MasterCard account. You may be charged a small processing fee depending on the transfer method you select when transferring the funds.

  • Direct deposit (U.S. bank accounts only) – There are no fees to receive funds via direct deposit.
  • PayPal — We do not charge you a fee to receive payment via PayPal. PayPal may charge you fees depending on the transaction. Please read PayPal’s user agreement for more information.
  • Prepaid MasterCard — We do not charge you a fee to receive payment via Prepaid MasterCard. Payoneer, the card issuer, charges a one-time card activation fee, a monthly account maintenance fee, and loading and cash withdrawal fees.
  • Wire transfer (Non-U.S. bank accounts only) — $9.00 per wire transfer.
  • Check — $3.00 each time we send funds to you by check. If you do not receive your check and ask us to issue a new check, there is a $30.00 fee to cover the bank’s stop check fees and reprocessing.
