About

Traditional portrait and still life artist. Oil painting, charcoal, pencil and pen and ink. People, pets, houses and other subjects. Shortlisted for the National Gallery Portrait Prize.

I enjoy painting or drawing the detail of a subject and endeavour to create realistic-looking pictures. My portraits strive to capture as much of the likeness as possible of a subject including those aspects of their personality that makes them unique. In this sense I try to not only reflect the perceptual observed image but ensure that the essence of what really defines that person or animal radiates through.
I want the finished picture to not only look appealing in theme, colour and composition, but also to achieve an accurate realism. In this sense my pictures try to celebrate the fine detail and physical attributes of a subject without compromising its aesthetic appearance.
Taking pride in ensuring that my customers are extremely satisfied with the end result, I would not produce anything which I would not want to hang on my own wall. I devote maximum effort and dedication to achieving the best work I can.

Work Terms

I can work most days and times and strive to accommodate to meet deadlines. I prefer to charge per job/project rather than per hour - that way clients pay for a finished piece rather than just my time. Approximate timescales for completing pictures: Oil painting portraits and still life: between 2 and 5 weeks depending on size; pencil/charcoal/pen and ink portraits: between 1 and 3 weeks depending on size. If I had to charge a day rate, it would be around £116 per day. Depending on the job, materials /travel costs etc may be slightly extra. Happy to give a detailed quote for jobs on request. I primarily work from photos but can do site visits for portraits etc. Meeting a subject in person really helps with capturing the essence of a personality in a picture.
