We urgently need a simple slide (PowerPoint or Keynote) that illustrates that not all in Haiti are poor and that there is great income disparity even among those who live in poverty. It could be a simple nested bar graph. At the top could be the billionaire Haitian Gilbert Bigio, who is reportedly the wealthiest man in the Caribbean. Then according to the World Bank, 60 percent of the population lives in poverty (average income of less than $3.20 per day) and 24 percent of the population (a sub-category of the poor) live in extreme poverty (average incomes of less than $2.15 per day). Finally, there is a category among those trapped in extreme poverty who have no reliable income at all. Some economist call this ultra-poverty. In Haiti we estimate that the poorest 6 percent of the population is trapped in ultra-poverty. So, we are looking for a slide that first represent the entire population (probably with a bar, maybe light blue), then, with a click, reveals the wealthiest billionaire extreme at the top, then with the next click shades in the bottom 60 percent who live in poverty (avg. daily income below $3.20) maybe in slightly darker blue, then with another click shades in the bottom 24 percent of the bar with darker blue representing those living in extreme poverty (avg. daily income below $2.15), and finally, the final click reveals the bottom six percent of the population trapped in ultra-poverty with the darkest blue at the very bottom of the bar.
