Designer Needed for Tween Portfolio / Member Kit Holder (Ages 11–13):

We're looking for a strong designer to create a fresh, modern portfolio/member kit holder for a tween product for girls ages 11–13.

This is a real product going into production. It will be made from soft-touch matte vinyl/faux leather with full-color printing.

The holder will be approximately 11” x 11” square and will hold a journal and other program materials. It will have an envelope-style flap, small gusset, and a closure, likely a hidden magnetic snap or another clean, well-designed solution.

The current working name is "Glow Girl," but the final name may change. The design should not rely too heavily on the specific words. We need a flexible visual direction that can work even if the name changes.

The Goal:

Design something a 12-year-old girl would be genuinely excited to own — not something her parents picked out for her.

The design should feel:

  • Fun
  • Modern
  • Girly, but not childish
  • Elegant and worth keeping
  • Personal, thoughtful, and slightly elevated

What We Need:

  • 2–3 original design concepts
  • Front, flap, back, spine/gusset, and interior design direction
  • Simple mockups showing the holder both closed and open
  • A design that coordinates with the attached journal, but does not simply copy it

Please Avoid:

  • Childish or cutesy designs
  • Overly mature or corporate looks
  • Busy or cluttered layouts
  • Generic template-style work
  • Designs that feel like party supplies, school folders, or binders

Important

We are not looking for another version of the journal cover.

The journal is only one item that will go inside the holder. The holder should feel like the special item she keeps for years after the journal is gone.

We are especially interested in designers who can propose fresh directions we haven't already considered, rather than simply refining the attached concepts.

About Us:

Bat Mitzvah Clubs International is a nonprofit educational organization serving Jewish girls around the world.

This project is part of a larger effort to create meaningful, high-quality products and experiences for girls approaching Bat Mitzvah. Because we are a nonprofit organization, our budget for this project is limited. We're looking for a designer who can create strong, thoughtful work without requiring a large-agency budget.

More important than finding the lowest price is finding the right person. We hope to build an ongoing relationship with a designer whose style, judgment, and understanding of this audience are a good fit.

This portfolio is just one of several products we are developing. Once we find the right designer, additional design projects are expected in the future.

Attachments:

  • Current "Wave" concept (which we somewhat liked, but want to explore beyond)
  • Current journal cover
  • Brand guidelines (although not terribly committed to this)
  • Detailed project brief from a previous design phase

To Apply:

Please send

  1. Relevant portfolio samples (especially product, packaging, stationery, tween/teen, beauty, lifestyle, or fashion-style design)
  2. A short note explaining your approach
  3. Your estimated timeline
  4. Whether you can prepare production-ready files after concept approval

If your typical projects are significantly above this budget range, this project may not be the right fit. However, if you enjoy mission-driven work and are interested in the possibility of ongoing projects, we'd love to hear from you.

In 2–3 sentences, tell me how you would approach this project.

This is probably what I'd do if I were you. With 30–50 bids coming in, you'll immediately eliminate the people who didn't even read the description, and you'll quickly spot the handful who actually understand the project.

Please Read Before Applying:

• Please begin your proposal with the words "Tween Portfolio" and briefly answer:

• In 2–3 sentences, how would you approach this project?
