Writing & Translation Editing & Proofreading

Project Description:

I am seeking an experienced developmental editor for a mid-range critique of my fictionalized true crime inspired novel, currently 28,000 words into its first draft. The story is deeply rooted in the specific cultural landscape of the Mid-Atlantic South (Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina region). A genuine, native or long-term resident’s understanding of this region’s dialect, social dynamics, and atmosphere is non-negotiable for this project.

Scope of Work:

The selected editor will provide:

  • A comprehensive read-through of the existing manuscript.

  • A detailed editorial report (3-5 pages) addressing pacing, plot structure, character authenticity, and narrative voice.

  • Chapter-by-chapter notes focusing on strengths and areas for improvement.

  • Specific feedback on the cultural and regional authenticity of the setting, dialogue, and character behavior.

Mandatory Requirements for Applicants: To be considered, your proposal MUST include answers to the following three questions. Proposals without these answers will be dismissed.

  1. Screening Question: The working title is “Copperhead- The Venomous Suitor”. In one or two sentences, speculate on the significance of this title based on common themes in the true crime genre.

  2. Cultural Competence Question: Describe your personal familiarity with the American Mid-Atlantic South. Are you a native, a long-term resident, or have you extensively written about this region? Please be specific.

  3. Process Question: Briefly outline your typical process for conducting a manuscript evaluation. What are the key elements you prioritize in a first-draft critique?

Additional Qualifications:

  • Native English speaker is mandatory.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in fiction editing, with proven experience in the crime/thriller/mystery genres.

  • Must provide links to a professional website, LinkedIn profile, or examples of previous work.

  • Excellent communication skills and availability for a brief follow-up discussion via Google Meet.

Budget: $900 - $1,500 (Fixed Project Fee)Timeline: Completion required within 3 weeks of contract signing and manuscript delivery.
