How I work
As an author’s editor, I work for you. I’m not a critic; I’m on your side. Your goal is to convey information to the reader. My goal is to remove the obstacles between your message and the reader.
I’m in favor of light editing. This means I don’t make edits that aren’t necessary or comments that aren’t helpful. I respect the author’s writing style and voice and do not impose my preferences.
My English editing service includes copyediting and language editing
- Correcting errors of grammar, syntax, and word usage
- Fixing mechanical errors (hyphenation, capitalization, punctuation, use of italic and bold font, format of endnotes and footnotes, etc.) to ensure the document conforms to the publisher’s style guide or the client’s preferred editorial style (such as Chicago, APA, or AP)
- Improving sentence structure by rewriting long or unclear sentences
- Suggesting improvements of style without altering the author’s voice: eliminating clutter, improving verb choice, varying sentence length, using the active voice, etc.
- Suggesting ways to reorganize the content to improve flow and logic
- Querying any content inconsistency or anything else that may need the author’s attention
- Ensuring the document uses the right voice and tone for its target audience, and eliminating biased language
- Checking endnotes, footnotes, appendices, and figure and table captions
- Explaining my major editing choices (for example, rewriting or deleting a sentence) in plain English
Optional (for an additional fee)
- Checking in-text citations against the reference list
- Checking and correcting the reference list
- Formatting the reference list or bibliography according to the publisher’s style guide
